The Crazed One, for instance, shows a man gone mad, waving his hands while running through the remnants of a bombed-out town. Devambez often used an elevated vantage point to convey the large number of troops and structures required by the war, the seeming insignificance of each solider, and the vast amount of destruction unleashed. People are shown huddling in the rain, hiding in trenches, shivering in the cold, and dodging shellfire. Women, the elderly, and children are taken hostage, used as human shields, and deprived of food and coal. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Early Christian (Coptic) Monastery at Esna Edwin Howland Blashfield (American, 1848-1936). Early Christian (Coptic) Monastery at Esna, March 1, 1887. Graphite on cream, medium-weight, smooth wove paper, Sheet: 8 1/4 x 10 3/4 in. (21 x 27.3 cm). Made during a trip down the Nile, these two precise drawings by Edwin Howland Blashfield depict architectural landmarks of Egypt. In his image of the twelfth-century Coptic monastery Deir el-Shuhada, the artist juxtaposed linear hatch marks with dark shading to capture the play of light amid the transept arches. He also included a careful study of a mural painting of Saint Stephen, as well as color and light notations. (This drawing helped archaeologists in the 1960s discover the mural, which had been covered with whitewash in the intervening years.) In Temple of Khonsu at Karnak, Blashfield recorded the famous ancient forest” of colossal columns, focusing primarily on their regularized geometric arrangement rather than their decorative hierog

Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.
