Date: 1882-83.Although Seurat is best known for his scenes of urban life, many of his paintings of 1881-84 depict rural laborers and landscapes. He initially favored an earth-toned palette reminiscent of the work of earlier painters of the countryside, such as Jean-François Millet. However, the bright hues of this picture reflect Seurat's growing interest in Impressionist techniques and his reading of treatises on color, especially the American Ogden Rood's <i>Modern Chromatics</i> (published in English in 1879, and in French in 1881). John Singer Sargent spent part of several summers painting open-air subjects in Italys Val dAosta. The resulting works reveal his pleasure in the description of vividly brilliant light. To suggest an alluring sensuality, Sargent often dressed his models in costumes that he had purchased in the Middle East. Here, several figures almost seem to merge with the water, enhancing the intimacy of the gathering. All three male figures were modeled by Nicola dInverno, Sargents servant, a fact that reveals the contrivances underpinning this seemingly casual scene. American Art ca. 1907

First Steps, after Millet 1890 Vincent van Gogh Dutch In fall and winter 1889-90, while a voluntary patient at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted twenty-one copies after Millet, an artist he greatly admired. He considered his copies "translations" akin to a musician's interpretation of a composer's work. He let the black-and-white imageswhether prints, reproductions, or, as here, a photograph that his brother, Theo, had sentpose "as a subject," then he would "improvise color on it." Date: ca. 1875.Tissot was an early and avid aficionado of Japanese woodblock prints, from which silhouetted figure and the prominent clump of vegetation in this work are thought to derive. Until this painting reappeared at auction in 1981, its composition was known for only by means of a related drypoint. When that print was exhibited in London, in 1876, it was inexplicably singled out by a critic who described it as "intensely vulgar, but clever enough for the public it appeals to.". Fan Mount: The Cabbage Gatherers ca. 1878-79 Camille Pissarro French This is one of many painted fans that Pissarro began to produce with the encouragement of Degas, who envisioned a room devoted to fans at the 1879 Impressionist exhibition. While Degas favored designs showing urban entertainment, Pissarro opted for rural subjects. Here, peasant women in bright kerchiefs harvest cabbages and tend the fields. The work was among the first by the artist to be acquired by an American. Louisine Elder (later Mrs. H. O. Date: 1870.Following his experience as an illustrator during the Civil War, Homer turned his attention to lighter scenes of contemporary life, often focusing on fashionable young women. This painting of three bathers on a Massachusetts beach was his most daring subject to date. Critics were less disturbed by its disquieting mood than by the fact that, as one observed, the figures were "exceedingly red-legged and ungainly." As in much of Homer's art, an air of mystery and melancholy imbues the scene, suggesting deeper meanings below the surface. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
