The Gardener 1882-83 Georges Seurat French Although Seurat is best known for his scenes of urban life, many of his paintings of 1881-84 depict rural laborers and landscapes. He initially favored an earth-toned palette reminiscent of the work of earlier painters of the countryside, such as Jean-François Millet. However, the bright hues of this picture reflect Seurats growing interest in Impressionist techniques and his reading of treatises on color, especially the American Ogden Roods Modern Chromatics (published in English in 1879, and in French in 1881).. Railroad Bridge over the Marne at Joinville. Artist: Armand Guillaumin (French, Paris 1841-1927 Orly). Dimensions: 23 1/8 x 28 3/8 in. (58.7 x 72.1 cm). Date: 1871-75.Armand Guillaumin may be less well known than his illustrious friends Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro, but he was indeed a talented landscape painter, especially in the 1870s. Guillaumin developed an interest in viaducts and bridges as an employee of the Paris-Orléans railway, and later, the Department of Roads and Bridges. This lyrically beautiful landscape was painted in the upper valley of the Marne in northeastern France, only a few miles from central Paris.
