These collections often included exotic birds such as parrots, admired for their rarity, as well as more familiar native species. In 1731 the Meissen manufactory began a new genre in European porcelain, producing several hundred life-size and near-life-size porcelain birds and animals, many destined for the Japanese Palace of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony (1670-1733). To create them, factory modelers found inspiration in nature, looking both to living and stuffed specimens, as well as zoological illustrations and Asian porcelain precedents. The great Meissen modeler Johann Joachim Kändler is known to have copied from life the birds kept at the royal aviarBagel left on a standClose-up of metallic flag with a menorahOld corkscrew and bottle of wine on the boardClose-up of a door knocker, dolphins and the Maltese Cross are signs of the knights of Malta, Valletta, Malta, EuropePhoto essay on a healer, magnetizer, dowser.Chocolate pyramid with blurred backgroundgolden vintage ornament on wallKnightly board Knightly board. But a closer look reveals broken glass and a cone of paper (intended to hold spices) torn from an almanac, both reminders of our swiftly passing days. Heda made a name for himself as an artist by achieving a variety of pictorial effects, such as the illusion of polished silver, glistening oysters, or reflective glass, while working almost exclusively in shades of gray.
