This early 1900s photo shows an Inland Steel company workers at the process of pouring the ingots. The company's business was reducing iron ore to steel. Its only steel mill was located in East Chicago, Indiana, on the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal and a large landfill protruding out into Lake Michigan. When this open hearth asteel is done to a turn, it is drawn off into a huge ladle suspended from the overhead traveling crane. The ladle then moves along the row of ingot molds that you see in this picture. A small trap at the bottom of the ladle is opened and one after another of these ingot molds is filled with the molten steel. The molds stand on waiting cars and when filled they are pulled into the yard where, after they have sufficiently cooled, they are run under the 'stripper.'.

The Navy's New Research 'Roundabout'-- A laboratory technician gives an impression of the size of the rotating beam at the Hydrodynamic Research Laboratories at Teddington. The Admiralty's new million £1 million Hydrodynamic Research Laboratories-built principally to aid design of underwater craft and weapons-were opened to the Press at Teddington, Middlesex, to-day (Friday). Most spectacular item of equipment is the 60-ton rotating beam, which can move models through the water at speeds up to 100 knots. Two workers are dwarfed by the five J-2 engines of the Saturn V second stage (S-II) as they make final inspections prior to a static test firing by North American Space Division. These five hydrogen -fueled engines produced one million pounds of thrust, and placed the Apollo spacecraft into earth orbit before departing for the moon. The towering 363-foot Saturn V was a multi-stage, multi-engine launch vehicle standing taller than the Statue of Liberty. Altogether, the Saturn V engines produced as much power as 85 Hoover Dams.

S74-28295 (September 1974) --- American-built hardware for the joint U.S.-USSR Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission undergoes pre-delivery preparations in the giant clean room at Rockwell International Corporation s Space Division at Downey, California. The U.S. portion of the ASTP docking system is in the right foreground. In the right background is the cylindrical-shaped docking module, which is designed to link the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft when they dock in Earth orbit next summer. In the left background is the Apollo Command Module which they will carry the three American astronauts into Earth orbit.

New pumps are scheduled to be installed soon. Now at Launch Pad 39-B, Discovery is set for launch in mid-March for Mission STS-29. Primary payload will be TDRS-D. An inlet duct lowered into the 20-foot diameter test section of the Altitude Wind Tunnel at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory. Engines and hardware were prepared in the facilitys shop area. The test articles were lifted by a two-rail Shaw box crane through the high-bay and the second-story test chamber before being lowered into the test section. Technicians then spent days or weeks hooking up the supply lines and data recording telemetry. The engines were mounted on wingspans that stretched across the test section. The wingtips attached to the balance frames trunnions, which could adjust the angle of attack. The balance frame included six devices that recorded data and controlled the engine. The measurements were visible in banks of manometer boards next to the control room. Photographs recorded the pressure levels in the manometer tubes, and the computing staff manually converted the data into useful measurements. A mechanical
