CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Ground support equipment technicians prepare one of the jacking, equalizing and leveling, or JEL, hydraulic cylinders for removal from crawler-transporter 1 at the crawler transporter maintenance facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Sixteen new JEL hydraulic cylinders will be installed on CT-1 to increase load carrying capacity and reliability.The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program at Kennedy continues to upgrade CT-1 as part of its general maintenance. CT-1 could be available to carry commercial launch vehicles to the launch pad. The crawler-transporters were used to carry the mobile launcher platform and space shuttle to Launch Complex 39 for space shuttle launches for 30 years.

Engineers and operations/maintenance personnel with the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) discuss the condition of the upstream gate on the John Day Dam navigation lock, located on the Columbia River near Rufus, Oregon, July 26 in between inspections of the gate after it malfunctioned due to a broken guide wheel. While the Corps works to fix the 215,000-pound vertical lift gate, its continuing to pass vessels through the lock using a floating bulkheada wall that can be moved in and out of place with a tugboat and essentially used as a temporary gate. Currently, vessel lockages, which typically take about 45 minutes, are taking twice as long. The guide wheels, two of which are attached to each side of the gate, act as rollers that keep the gate aligned as it moves up and down through its normal range of motion during lockages.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Members of a hurricane assessment team from Johnson Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center tour the Thermal Protection System (TPS) Facility at KSC after Hurricane Frances hit the east coast of Central Florida and Kennedy Space Center. At left is Martin Wilson, manager of the TPS operations. The facility, which creates the TPS tiles, blankets and all the internal thermal control systems for the Space Shuttles, is almost totally unserviceable at this time after losing approximately 35 percent of its roof. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Mechanical engineering students from Louisiana State University joined engineers and scientists at Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida as the students toured the facility to have a look at the flame trench. Designers are looking for new, flame and vibration-resistant materials to line the trench. To help in the search, a team of mechanical engineering students at Louisiana State University are to build a scaled-down version of the flame trench that Kennedy's scientists can use to try out sample materials for the trench. If the samples work in the lab, they can be tried out in the real flame trenches at Launch Pad 39A and 39B.The launch pad has been refurbished extensively and work is continuing to modify the pad to support a variety of launch vehicles in the future.

On August 15, 2018 NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine visited Marshall Space Flight Center. Upon his arrival he was greeted by MSFC Acting Director Jody Singer along with the senior management team. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board examine a piece of Columbia debris in the RLV Hangar. The debris was shipped from the collection point at Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, La. As part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic accident that claimed Columbia and her crew of seven, workers will attempt to reconstruct the orbiter inside the RLV.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the crawler transporter used for moving space shuttles to the NASA Kennedy Space Centers launch pads, three former crawler workers tour one of the crawlers still in use. From the top are Sylvan “Skip” Montagna, Fred Renaud and Fred Wallace. Media representatives and invited guests had the opportunity to tour one of NASA's two crawlers. This included the driver cab and engine room. Guests included current drivers and operators, as well as drivers from the Apollo Program. In January 1966, the crawler completed its first successful move with a 10.6-million-pound launch umbilical tower. It moved three-quarters of a mile in about nine hours. Throughout 40 years of service, the two crawlers have moved more than 3,500 miles and carried seven vehicles.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Columbia Debris Hangar, Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach (right) talks to the media about activities that have taken place since the Columbia accident on Feb. 1, 2003. STS-107 debris recovery and reconstruction operations are winding down. To date, nearly 84,000 pieces of debris have been recovered and sent to KSC. That represents about 38 percent of the dry weight of Columbia, equaling almost 85,000 pounds.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Visitors on the Launch Complex 39 Observation Gantry at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida experience a rare site -- the mobile launcher, or ML, rolling along the crawlerway from Launch Pad 39B to the park site near the Vehicle Assembly Building. Data on the ML collected from structural and functional engineering tests during its two-week stay on the pad will be used in the next phases of construction. The 355-foot-tall ML structure, which took about two years to construct, will be modified by NASAs 21st Century Ground Systems Program to support NASAs Space Launch System, the heavy-lift rocket that will launch astronauts into deep space on future exploration missions.

Government officials and river stakeholders visited the Montgomery Locks and Dam on the Ohio River in Monaca, Pennsylvania, Aug. 18. The visit intended to provide the group with a tour of the facility and promote discussion of the $857 million funding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District received as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Upper Ohio Navigation project is part of the National Economic Development plan for improving the Upper Ohio River Navigation. The Emsworth and Dashields locks and dams, two other vital locks and dams on the Ohio River, will also receive money for improvements from the BIL.
