Using Ocean Depth Precision Graph Recorder. Mr. J. J. McConnell of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office of Washington, D.C., determines water depth with a precision graph recorder on board the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind in far northern waters off Alaska. This was done during the oceanographic phase of the Northwind's summer 1962 Bering Sea Patrol during which she charted the Oyashio Current, East Siberian Sea, Northern Bering Sea and far into the Arctic. The data collected in those areas will provide important information on the development of marine life which is vital to the Alaskan fisheries. Other members of the oceanographic team which the Northwind carried on the mission included representatives from the Universities of Washington and Oregon State as well as several other men from the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office and crew members of the icebreaker.

It's the Coast Guard's Alaska Patrol Now. Jerry E. Helms, Photographer's Mate second class, USCG, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, dries one the many 100-ft. rolls of photographic seismicgraphs seismographs taken on board the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND during a seismic survey made in the Chukchi Sea, October 1963. As part of the 1964 Alaska Patrol, the NORTHWIND's oceanographic mission is including similar seismic soundings off the northernmost tip of Pt. Barrow. These studies are expected to throw light on the conditions which produced so catastrophic an earthquake as the recent one along Alaska's southern coast.

A Soundman At Work. This soundman is operating one of the echo-ranging devices installed on light ships during the war. In peace time, this device is not regula equipment for this type of vessel since its primary use was for detecting submarines. The soundman is shown aboard the Blunts Reef light ship, No. 100, whose station is off the California coast. The light ship service is one of the most important functions of the Coast Guard.
