Cleaning The Soil - By Steam -- At work in the glass-houses - placing a new grid into position. Cleaning the soil by steam is now being carried at the Cheshunt (Hertforshire) Nurseries of Messrs. E. Stevens. Steel grids which penetrate the earth to a depth of 18 inches are forced in to the soil side by side. The grids are attached to pipes where in turn coupled to a boiler outside the glass-house. The steam if then forced into the soil at high pressure. All germs and bacteria are destroyed and the yearly renewal of hundreds of tons of soil is now unnecessary unnecessary - the old earth being completely purified and sweetened. January 15, 1949.
