In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale Strong Hans. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the illustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded him as illustrator for later editions of the tales. Stong Hans: Robbers steal a mother and her small son. At nine, the son, Hans, makes himself a club and tries to hit the chief of the robbers. The chief slaps the boy down. Hans tries a few years later and beats the robbers. He goes home, gets a, stronger staff, and sets out. He meets a man strong enough to twist trees that he calls Fir-Twister and a giant who can break rocks with his fist that he nicknames Rock-Chopper. The Woodcutter's Breakfast (The Faggot Gatherer's Meal). Artist: William Henry Hunt (British, London 1790-1864 London). Dimensions: 13 x 17 in. (33.0 x 43.2 cm). Date: ca. 1832-34 ().Hunt's meticulous genre and still life subjects prefigure the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's emphasis on meticulous detail. This work displays the artist's mature mastery of watercolor, admiringly described by his pupil John Ruskin in "The Elements of Drawing" (1857). To create this image, Hunt stippled a white gouache ground using broken touches of watercolor and extensive passages of scraping to create bold effects of light and texture. His intense, realistic vision of British rural life focuses on an unadorned cottage interior where a humble figure rests on a bench. The distinct textures of the brick fireplace, rough flagstones, simple furniture, earthenware pot, iron kettle, and piled branches are all lovingly recorded. Date: 1890.This intimate scene depicts Luce's close friend and fellow painter Gustave Perrot "getting up" and dressing as morning light streams through a garret window. Luce enlivened the traditional subject of an artist in his humble living quarters with a vivid palette of red, orange, yellow, and blue, applied in stippled brushstrokes, in keeping with the newly minted technique of Pointillism. Little is known about Perrot, aside from the fact that he died young. In 1892, his brief career was remembered in a fifteen-work tribute held at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris.
