Moon Globe, based on images from automatic stations Luna-3, Zond-4, Zond-5, Zond-6, Zond-7 and Zond-8. The Soviet automatic station Luna-3 was the first to return images of the lunar far side on October 7, 1959. Signal acquisition was carried out in Crimea, Simeiz Observatory. Between 1965 and 1970 spacecraft Zond-4 - Zond-8 continued exploration of the Moon and obtained photographs from a distance of 1500 km and 9500 km. The first map of the lunar far sidewith hundreds of surface details identified by their reflection characteristics was based on collected materials. Full catalog of these details was included in the "Atlas of the far side of the Moon" (1960).

Inflatable airlock from Voskhod 2, a Soviet manned space mission in March 1965. The Vostok-based Voskhod 3KD spacecraft with two crew members on board, Pavel Belyayev and Alexei Leonov, was equipped with an inflatable airlock. It established another milestone in space exploration when Alexei Leonov became the first person to leave the spacecraft in a specialized spacesuit to conduct a 12-minute "spacewalk"

JWST Full-Scale Model on Display.A full-scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope was built by the prime contractor, Northrop Grumman, to provide a better understanding of the size, scale and complexity of this satellite. The model is constructed mainly of aluminum and steel, weighs 12,000 lb., and is approximately 80 feet long, 40 feet wide and 40 feet tall. The model requires 2 trucks to ship it and assembly takes a crew of 12 approximately four days. This model has travelled to a few sites since 2005. The photographs below were taken at some of its destinations. The model is pictured here in Munich, Germany

The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope just over 1,000 feet (305 m) across, the largest single radio telescope. The main metal collecting dish sits fixed a hemispherical karst sinkhole. Because it is fixed, a spherical reflector hangs 500 feet (150 m) over the dish on a 900 ton platform, known as 'the feed'. Technicians in a basket hang in a small cable car on their way to the feed. The observatory is the primary location of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, NAIC.

Original photo and caption dated June 22, 1988: "A dwarf wheat variety known as Yecoro Rojo flourishes in KSC's Biomass Production Chamber. Researchers are gathering information on the crop's ability to produce food, water and oxygen, and then remove carbon dioxide. The confined quarters associated with space travel require researchers to focus on smaller plants that yield proportionately large amounts of biomass. This wheat crop takes about 85 days to grow before harvest.&quot

A display case dedicated to astronaut Roger Chaffee is shown inside the new tribute to the crew of Apollo 1 who perished in a fire at the launch pad on Jan. 27, 1967, during training for the mission. Gus Grissom, Ed White II and Chaffee were lost during the fire. The tribute at the Apollo/Saturn V Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center opened Jan. 27, 2017, 50 years after the crew of three was lost. It features numerous items recalling the lives of the three astronauts. It also includes the three-part hatch to the spacecraft itself, the first time any part of the Apollo 1 spacecraft has been displayed publicly. A version of the hatch after it was redesigned is also showcased as an example of improvements NASA made throughout the agency and to the Apollo spacecraft that would later carry astronauts to the moon.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Workers check the position of the fairing for Deep Space 1 as it reaches the top of the Mobile Service Tower where it will be attached to the Boeing Delta 7326 rocket that will launch on Oct. 15, 1998. The first flight in NASA's New Millennium Program, Deep Space 1 is designed to validate 12 new technologies for scientific space missions of the next century. Onboard experiments include an ion propulsion engine and software that tracks celestial bodies so the spacecraft can make its own navigation decisions without the intervention of ground controllers. Deep Space 1 will complete most of its mission objectives within the first two months, but will also do a flyby of a near-Earth asteroid, 1992 KD, in July 1999
