They are getting drunk; folio 67 (recto) from the Madrid Album 'B' 1796-98 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish Three debauched women are shown drinking wine, while a fourth reaches for the bottle and, in a drunken gesture, brings her face close to the central figure, perhaps sharing a joke or aping intimacy. The drawing on the other side of the page (35.103.10) provided the basis for plate 33 of the Caprichos. The inscription announces its subject as deception, and the drawing shows a quack dentist pulling teeth. Quackery was such a problem in Madrid during the 1790s that measures were taken to weed out fake practitioners.. They are getting drunk; folio 67 (recto) from the Madrid Album 'B'. The Evening Lamp Julian Alden Weir American ca. 1890 Weir admired the expressive potential of etching long before he attempted the technique: like his father before him, Weir collected old master prints, and particularly admired those of Rembrandt. Weir may well have had the Dutch artist's dark tonalities in mind when he etched this view of a woman reading by the lamplight, a cat outstretched at her feet. The compelling effects were hard-won: the artist recorded that "working by night" on this etching "injured my eyes."

Portrait of a Woman and her Dog, 1871, Henri Monnier, French, Paris 1799-Paris 1877, 8 5/16 x 5 7/16 in. (21.11 x 13.81 cm) (sheet), Watercolor and ink with white heightening, France, 19th century, Henri Bonaventure Monnier (1805-1877) was an actor and playwright as well as an artist. A contemporary of Honoré Daumier and Paul Gavarni, Monnier was a good-humored chronicler of French middle-class mores. He applied his considerable wit to satirizing the foibles and pretentions of his contemporaries and is best known for his creation of the character of Monsieur Joseph Prudhomme, a typical bourgeoiswell-intentioned but stupid and pretentious, naïve and very verbose. Building on the success of his fictitious everyman, in the 1850s Monnier stepped on stage, bringing his character to life. The charming drawing of a woman reading bears no specific identification, but given her age and the intimacy of the scene, she may in fact be based on the artist’s wife.

Jan Cock Blomhoff (Amsterdam, 5 August 1779 - Amersfoort, 15 August 1853) was director ('opperhoofd') of Dejima, the Dutch trading colony in the harbour of Nagasaki, Japan, 1817 - 1824. During his first stay on the island (1809-1813) he had an affair with a Japanese woman and the couple had a child, which died in 1813. When he arrived in Dejima for the second time in August 1817 he was accompanied by his wife Titia Bergsma, whom he had married in 1815, his son Johannes, and Petronella Munts, a Dutch wetnurse and an Indonesian maid. The ladies and the little boy were not allowed to stay. In the short time they stayed there, till December 1817, they were often drawn by artists who had only ever seen Japanese women. 500 hundred different prints were made and widely circulated throughout the country.

This painting by the Dutch artist Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) shows the meeting of Antony and Cleopatra on the River Cydnus. Ancients told of Mark Antony, one of the top leaders of Roman world in first century B.C. summoning Cleopatra to meet him in Tarsus (in present-day Turkey) in 41 B.C. She delayed for a bit, so it is said, and then sailed up the River Cyndus on a magnificent barge, filled with flowers and scented with perfumes. The scene shown here is when Antony first enters the barge and see Cleopatra.
