Thomas's wood engraving reproduces a painting by Frederick Goodall, the second son of the skilled line engraver Edward Goodall. As a child, Frederick and his siblings had been encouraged to pursue art by John Ruskin, Clarkson Stanfield, David Roberts, and J.M.W. Turner. At sixteen, Goodall showed four commissioned watercolors at the Royal Academy, then won a silver medal at the Society of Arts for an oil painting. This early success allowed visits to Brittany and Ireland, and led him to depict rustic village subjects influenced by David Wilkie. In 1852, Goodall was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. . In a room there is a richly dressed lawyer for the fireplace with a desk, for which a gesturing man is standing. A boy has a ham and sausage with the man. The man may ask the lawyer who makes the man with a hand gesture clear that board costs money. In the background there is a bookcase with two busts and behind a fence, the silhouette of a figure is visible at a desk. The nose, the right eye and the sleeve of the boy are completely cut out, so that only a small part of the shaded cheek and the forehead is visible.

The Pit Door/ La Porte du Parterre November 9, 1784 After Robert Dighton the Elder British The struggling crowd hoping to attend the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London, demonstrates how strenuous attending a play could be in the eighteenth century. At this time, unreserved seats on benches in the pit cost three shillings, wealthier patrons sat in more expensive boxes above, and ordinary folk climbed to the upper galleries. A poster on the wall indicates that the attraction is Sarah Siddons in a royal command performance of The Grecian Daughter. Siddons had established herself in 1782 as the citys leading tragedienne, with a dramatic style that stirred up extreme emotions in the audience, and ticket demand for her performances far exceeded supply.
