The Yulin Caves are a Buddhist cave temple complex in Guazhou County, Gansu Province, China. The site is located some 100 km east of the oasis town of Dunhuang and the Mogao Caves. It takes its name from the eponymous elm trees lining the Yulin River, which flows through the site and separates the two cliffs from which the caves have been excavated. The forty-two caves house some 250 polychrome statues and 4,200 square metres of wall paintings, dating from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty (7th to 14th centuries). The site was among the first in China to be designated for protection in 1961 as a Major National Historical and Cultural Site. In 2008 the Yulin Grottoes were submitted for future inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Chinese Section of the Silk Road.

Tile Panel with Calligraphic Inscription dated A.H. 1000/A.D. 1591-92 Traditional ceramic production in Syria continued after the region came under Ottoman control in the early sixteenth century. Its calligraphy reads: "The weak servant Kayun ibn 'Abdallah, the sinful, the one in need of Gods mercy, founded this blessed mosque. It was built in the year 1000 [A.H./A.D. 1591-92." Further examples of Syrian tilework panels flank the entrance to the adjoining gallery.. Tile Panel with Calligraphic Inscription. dated A.H. 1000/A.D. 1591-92. Ottoman, tilework Chimneypiece; from Turkey, probably Istanbul. Dated 1731. The names around the hood are those of the Seven Sleepers. Persecuted under the Roman emperor Decius, these Christian men took refuge in a cave. They fell asleep, waking centuries later under Christian rule. The Seven Sleepers are mentioned in the Qur'an as an example of God's protection of the righteous. Their names were therefore used to invoke that protection. Fritware with under-glaze decoration

Tile early 14th century Once part of a calligraphic frieze within a tomb or religious structure, this tile holds three lines of religious text. Executed in thuluth script, the raised writing of the central band is part of Sura 62 (Al-Jumuah), Verse 6, while the smaller calligraphy painted in luster above and below is from another section of the Qur’an. Perhaps set at eye level above a dado of geometric tiles, the full group once formed a continuous band of text. A total of twenty tiles from this frieze are known to exist, including eight in the Museum’s collection.. Tile 450370
