Dragon after 1200 Spanish Tail coiled, claws extended, and feet braced, this dragon is a powerful counterpart to the lion opposite. Medieval beasts, whether real orimaginary, were often imbued with symbolic meaning, as they are in animal fables today. It is not always possible, however, to reconstruct their specific intention in a given monument, and such beasts could be for aesthetic delight,” as one thirteenth-century archbishop commented. The monastery from which this fresco comes was abandoned in 1841. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #84. Fragment of a Frieze 11th century Found in the area around the Tepe Madrasa mosque in Nishapur, this terracotta panel features an octagonal pattern with a star at its center. Remains of pigment on the surface suggest that the background was colored with red and blue, while the geometric shapes in the foreground were shaded in white. Terracotta, usually in the form of bricks, was used as a decorative material throughout Iran before being replaced by glazed tiles. At Nishapur, many fragments of large panels of terracotta carved with different types of designs provide evidence of yet another form of architectural decoration.. Fragment of a Frieze 449599

The reconstructed Balawat Gates which adorned the main doors of several buildings at Balawat (ancient Imgur-Enlil), dating to the reigns of Ashurnasirpal II (r. 883-859 BC) and Shalmaneser III (r. 859-824 BC). Their extensive use of narrative art depicting the exploits of Assyrian kings has cemented their position as some of the most important surviving works of art of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. When the Neo-Assyrian Empire fell in 614-612 BC, Balawat was destroyed.
