Album folio of poetry, c. 1725, 16 x 11 1/4 in. (40.64 x 28.58 cm), Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, India, 18th century, Album pages combining fine calligraphy with borders richly illuminated with floral and animal motifs were a favorite Mughal art form as early as Jahangir (1569-1627). During this time, the precious albums assembled from various sources (muraqqa), became popular at court and somewhat supplanted the illustrated book. The taste and expertise of its compiler, rather than the talent of a single artist, determined the range of theme, artistic quality, and coherency of an assembled album. This page shows four lines of graceful nasta'liq script set against a minutely rendered, scrolled floral background of gold and blue, approximating the Persian manner. The white borders, however, punctuated with carefully painted poppies, reflect Mughal court taste of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Man's Tunic A.D. 1000-1476 Central Coast This mans tunic, from the Central Coast of Peru, is composed of two panels of slit-tapestry dyed camelid wool over cotton supports, joined at the middle, with an opening for the head. The tunic would have originally been sewn together at the sides, leaving openings for the arms. The principal step-fret design is repeated in contrasting colors of blue, red, purple, pale orange, and tan, contained within two borders of s-shaped scrolls, with an additional band of s-shaped scrolls across the middle (at the shoulder line), all in the same palette. During the immediate pre-Inca and Inca periods, Central Coast textiles were exchanged widely, and related works are known from as far north as Pacatnamú on Perus North Coast and as far south as the site of La Centinela, about 200 kilometers south of Lima. The design of this tunic bears a resemblance to recently excavated murals at the site of Pachacamac, perhaps the pre-eminent oracle shrine of ancient P

Paravent. The MKG has a collection of handsome luxury articles of the important Hamburg leather artist Georg Hulbe, whose work was created at the threshold of historicism to the Art Nouveau and made important impulses from both styles. At the turn of the century, he led a large workshop with after all 200 employees, with their support he carried out a series of official orders, including the Hamburg Town Hall and the Berlin Reichstag. The Paravent, which unites as well as traditional leather techniques such as the relief section, the inlay or punishment, has hulbe as a virtuoso artist of his profession. On the Paris World's Fair of 1900 he was awarded a gold medal for this art. Gift by Mr. Hans A. Mestern, Hamburg
