The 1916 caption reads: Pieter de Hooch (1629-1677) Dutch School - "Dutch Interior (Lady Playing Cards before the Fire"). Interieur hollandais. in Louvre. Signed on the base of one of the oclumns supporting the mantelpiece "P.D. Hooch". Painted in oil on canvas. 2 ft 2.5 in x 2 ft 6.5 in w. Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch Golden Age painter famous for his genre works of quiet domestic scenes with an open doorway. He was a contemporary, in the Delft Guild of St. Luke, of Jan Vermeer with whom his work shares themes and style.

The Visit to the Nursery 1661 Gabriël Metsu Dutch In an impressively appointed room, modeled on a large chamber in the new Town Hall of Amsterdam, the parents of a newborn baby receive a fashionable well-wisher. Such a kraambezoek (cradle visit) was a minor ritual of polite society. At least two of the poses recall figures by one of Hollands closest observers of modern manners, Gerard ter Borch. The painting was celebrated in its own time—for example, in a poem by Jan Vos of 1662—but unfortunately its surface is badly worn from cleanings in the past.. The Visit to the Nursery 437071

The Visit 1746 Pietro Longhi (Pietro Falca) Italian An elegant woman looks out of the painting with an expression both bored and bemused. She is encircled by four men, including a standing figure who is probably her husband, a family chaplain, and a possible suitor dressed in yellow, whose offer of a biscuit to the dog may carry erotic overtones. The Letter 1746 Pietro Longhi (Pietro Falca) Italian An older man holding a coin negotiates with a procuress over a young woman, who reads with evident pleasure the letter he has written her as she takes a break from her millinery work. A young girl holds a doll that mimics the toppled mannequin on the table, suggesting she may follow in the older womans footsteps. The Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni praised Longhis dedication to truth, by which he meant the way in which the artist chronicled the foibles of contemporary society. This painting and three others in The Mets collection probably formed part of a series painted in 1746 for the Gambardi family in Florence.. The Letter 436904
