(75 cm). This unusually large fan, the function of which is uncertain, is painted on both sides with scenes of farming in winter and autumn. Winter is not shown.) The artist's signature, Isai, and two seals, kai and ka, are found on both sides.Isai was one of a large number of artists trained by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a nineteenth-century giant of printmaking and painting. It is generally recognized that many of the paintings traditionally attributed to this great master were actually executed by some of his pupils, such as Isai. Indeed, this painting reveals many of Hokusai's idiosyncrasies, such as the figure types, the manner of depicting foliage, and the clearly defined recession into space. Tile with Image of Phoenix late 13th century After the Mongol conquest of Persia in the thirteenth century, an extensive trade network opened from China to the Mediterranean, allowing goods to move more freely than in prior centuries. As the objects in this case demonstrate, Ilkhanid period artists readily adopted imagery from Chinese iconography, including lotus flowers, deer, dragons and other mythical creatures. This image of a soaring phoenix with crested head and elaborate trailing plumage exemplifies the adaptation of Chinese imagery by Persian artists. Miniature secretary incorporating a watch ca. 1766-72 James Cox Bejeweled butterflies and flowers that tremble in the slightest breath of air adorn this whimsical object, which plays tunes on a hidden music box and incidentally tells the time. The spring mechanism that powers the music is wound by inserting a key into a hole hidden behind one of rosettes near the bulls that support the cabinet. Based on actual rococo European cabinet designs, but with some improbable additions, the miniature is known to have been in the collection of Princess Z. M. Youssoupof in Saint Petersburg in 1904. Although it has been said to have been taken from China after the Boxer Rebellion in 1899, it may, in fact, have been imported into Russia long before. Square-form vase with decoration of Su Shis Former and Latter Rhapsodies on the Red Cliff China This vase records two texts titled “Ode on the Red Cliff,” masterpieces composed by the beloved poet and statesman Su Shi (1037-1101) in the autumn and winter of 1082. Its square form elegantly accommodates the two stories in both text and image. When Su visited the site, it was already rich with historical significance owing to the famous Battle of Red Cliff, believed to have been fought there at the end of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), but it was forever transformed by his famous poems and soon became a popular theme across all media. Central to both poems is the social aspect of the excursions.. Square-form vase with decoration of Su Shis Former and Latter Rhapsodies on the Red Cliff. China. Plate ca. 1791 Sèvres Manufactory French Porcelain decorated with a black ground in imitation of Asian lacquer was produced at Sèvres for about a fifteen-year period beginning in 1790. Furniture decorated with imported black lacquer panels saw a resurgence of popularity in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, and the Sèvres factory's efforts to simulate black lacquer on porcelain were probably stimulated by this renewed general interest in lacquer decoration. Black-ground Sèvres porcelain was decorated with chinoiserie scenes executed in gold, which was often applied in subtle tones of yellow, green, and red. Small decorative highlights were often executed in platinum, and the ability to apply platinumfirst mastered by the factory in 1790may have been an impetus to produce these lacquer-inspired pieces.[Jeffrey H. Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Culture: German, Augsburg or Nuremberg. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 2 7/16 × 1 11/16 in. (6.2 × 4.3 cm). Date: 1520-30.These sculptural reliefs (2015.388.1-.4) display extraordinary, jewel-like enameling accomplished through an innovative technique involving molten glass paste built up over an armature of gold wires on a silver base. In expressive detail, they represent four scenes of Christ's Passion at a tiny scale--fully appreciable only to those privileged enough to view the reliefs at close range. (The compositions owe more than a little to the Small Passion print series by the famous Northern Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer.) Expensive as they were, the plaques would have been worth only a fraction of the treasure in the container they decorated: most likely some lost relic, imbued with spiritual power and believed to bridge our world with the divine.Elizabeth Cleland, 2017.
