Kim Hong-do, better known as Danwon (1745-c. 1806), was a painter of the late Joseon period. A member of the Gimhae Kim clan, he grew up in present-day Ansan, South Korea, where he was taught by Pyoam Kang Sehwang, one of the most famous calligraphers of the day. He entered royal service as a member of the Dohwaseo, the official painters of the Joseon court, and drew the portrait of King Jeongjo. Danwon is known as the first Korean painter to extensively portray Korean daily life in a manner analogous to the Dutch Masters. Because of this, his paintings today are valued almost as much for the insight they shed on daily life in Joseon as for their inherent aesthetic value. Danwon Pungsokdo Cheop is an album of genre painting (pungsokhwa or pungsokdo) drawn by Kim Hongdo during the late Joseon dynasty. It was named after Kim's pen name, Danwon, and comprises 25 paintings in total. The album is painted with light watercolor on hanji (Korean paper). Each painting depicts vividly common peo

This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death. His daughter Ayako appears in the left panel. Immediately following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, there was much discontentment, particularly among the samurai who had lost all of their earlier prestige and privileges. Many Satsuma samurai far to the west were among the most reactionary, and when swords were prohibited in January 1877, their hatred of the government came to a head. The famous Satsuma Rebellion broke out in early 1877 under Saigo's leadership and lasted six months, with the fighting confined to Satsuma, itself. Saigo was wounded and at his own request, decapitated on the battlefield. His 40,000 samurai, traditionally the country's military elite had been defeated by an equal number of soldiers drafted into the newly-formed conscript army.. Civil and Military O
