Amusements at Higashiyama in Kyoto. Artist: Kano School. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image (each screen): 33 1/16 in. × 8 ft. 11 1/2 in. (84 × 273 cm). Date: ca. 1620s.Covered throughout with fascinating vignettes of people of every social class, this pair of screens depicts over three hundred people enjoying a sunny afternoon at the peak of the cherry-blossom season in Kyoto's scenic Eastern Hills, or Higashiyama district. The right and left screens each highlight a famous sacred site--Kiyomizudera Temple and Yasaka Shrine, respectively--and each features a festive outdoor banquet attended by elite samurai. The intricately patterned gold clouds create a dramatic background for the colorful genre scenes. The screens survive in remarkably fine condition considering their age. Though relatively small, about half the height of most screens, these masterpieces of Kano school painting convey the celebratory spirit of the age of a country finally at peace after nearly a century of civil war

Recluse gazing at a waterfall 1559 Ju Jie Chinese Ju Jie, a native of Suzhou, studied painting with Wen Jia (1501-1583) but also received instruction from Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), whose style he emulated so successfully that people considered him the master's most talented pupil. After refusing a summons from the eunuch manager of Suzhou's Imperial Silk Manufactury, however, Ju Jie's family was forced into poverty. He subsequently built a small home at the foot of Tiger Hill and lived out his life in relative poverty and ill healthas attested to by his inscription:In the jiwei year of the Jiajing reign on the day of Mild Cold [December 29, 1559 Xuanjin dropped by and produced this paper, pressing me for a painting by my clumsy brush. At the time I was ill and had long neglected brush and inkstone. In a disorderly way I daubed and rubbed; surely one must find it awful. May Xuanjin not be offended with my soiling his beautiful paper.(trans. after Aschwin Lippe)Executed in exquisitely

Date: 1470-1500.This exceptional painting on silk portrays four demonlike figures rendered in exacting, fantastic detail. A series of similar paintings have been preserved within albums in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace Library. Some of these display inscriptions, attributing the works to an artist called "Muhammad Siyah Qalam." While much of the material found in these albums may be attributable to late fifteenth-century Iran, the use of silk as a support for painting was rare in the region, suggesting these enigmatic paintings were produced elsewhere. Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Chrysanthemums (Momoyogusa), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

Chan master riding a mule before 1249 Unidentified artist Painted in a few swift brushstrokes and deftly applied ink washes, Chan Master Riding a Mule exemplifies the freely expressive manner of Chan (Zen, in Japanese) Buddhist painting, which relies less on descriptive detail than on the capturing of spiritual concentration within the artist to achieve a vivid depiction. Inscribed by the noted Chan master Wuzhun, to whom it traditionally has been attributed, the painting is probably the work of a contemporary Chan artist following the sketchy brush style of Liang Kai (active first half of the thirteenthcentury).Wuzhun, well known for his wisdom as well as for his eccentric behavior, inscribed this painting while he was living at the Qingshansi, a Chan temple near Hangzhou, where he settled after he was rewarded by Emperor Lizong (r. 1225-1264) following an imperial audience. The rider's facial features-prominent forehead, mustache, and wispy beard-are not unlike those of Wuzhun himsel

Playing the Qin in the Shade of the Pines Wen Zhengming Chinese Wen Zhengming was the most influential Suzhou painter of the sixteenth century. He created his own immortality with his dogged determination to excel, his dozens of students, and an unusually long life of prodigious artistic production. In Playing the Qin in the Shade of the Pines, one of Wen's largest works, the freely executed boulders and impressionistically rendered trees coalesce into powerful interlocking forms when viewed, as intended, from across a spacious hall. The scroll is roughly contemporaneous with Wen's equally large calligraphic scrolls of the late 1520s, which were commissioned by the Jiajing emperor (r. 1522-66).Playing the seven-string zither (qin), a versatile instrument able to suggest nature's sounds, is associated with the solitary self-cultivation and reclusive existence of the scholar. A seventeenth-century qin is on display in the Ming Room of the Astor Court.. Playing the Qin in the Shade of the

Birds and Flowers 17th century Kano Tan'yū Japanese The six paintings on silk bring together bird-and-flower paintings of the celebrated Edo Kano painter Tanyū and two of his most talented pupils: his nephew Kano Naonobu and the female painter Kiyohara Yukinobu. The master painted the two central panels, Naonobu the ones immediately to the right and left of his teachers, and Yukinobu the outermost ones. Tanyū is credited with reviving the fortunes of the Kano studio, and moved from Kyoto to Edo (where the Tokugawa Shogunate was based) in 1614. Along with Tanyū, Naonobu was considered one of the top Kano painters of the early Edo period. In 1630, he was summoned to Edo by the Shogun, and established the Kobikichō branch of the Kano studio. Yukinobu, perhaps the most talented female painter of the Edo period, is said to have been a daughter of Tanyūs niece and the celebrated painter Kusumi Morikage (ca. 1620-1690). Like her father, she reworked conventional themes from Muromachi in

Fireworks at Ikenohata 1881 (Meiji 14) Kobayashi Kiyochika On a summer evening, along Shinobazu Pond in the Ikenohata district in northeastern Tokyo, crowds of peoplevisible only in dark silhouettewatch fireworks explode in the distance. The spectators stand beneath a string of brightly lit lanterns, while a couple of children have climbed a tree to get a better view. The outlines of Benten Shrine, in the middle of Shinobazu Pond, can be seen on the right horizon while the lighted windows and lanterns illuminated on the far shore cast their shimmering reflections on the water. The print artist Kobayashi Kiyochika became famous for these “light ray pictures” (k?senga) that explored the play of light against darkness. Often depicting scenes illuminated by gas lamps that were becoming so prevalent in the city, Kiyochika discovered the profound world of darkness and shadows that recalled the Edo of his childhood. Between 1876 and 1881, during an age of rapid modernization, Kiyochika crea
