New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Oji, No. 118 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Oji, No. 118 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 9th month of 1857. Woodblock print, sheet: 14 3/16 x 9 1/4 in. (36.0 x 23.5 cm);. In the late 1850s, while Japanese color prints were dominated by themes of the fantastic, Hiroshige emphasized the realities of the observed world in his work. However, here he has ventured into the world of spirits. It was believed that on New Year's Eve all the foxes of the surrounding provinces would gather at a particular tree near Oji Inari Shrine, the headquarters of the regional cult of the god Inari. There the foxes would change their dress for a visit to the shrine, where they would be given orders for the coming year. On the way, the animals would emit distinctive flames by which local farmers were able to predict the crops of the coming year. Asian Art 9th

Sunshower at Nihonbashi. Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1797-1858 Tokyo (Edo)). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 10 1/8 x 15 in. (25.7 x 38.1 cm). Date: 1833-34.In another version of one of Hiroshige's most effective compositional techniques, the view is from a bridge spanning Edo's Sumida River to another bridge. This bright, tranquil scene is an interesting contrast to the vigorous human and natural activity in Sudden Shower on the Great Bridge, shown to the right. In this horizontal composition, the bridge at Nihonbashi, the first stage of the route immortalized in his Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, is seen as rain begins to fall. Against the still light sky are glimpsed Edo's two other great sights, the Shogun's castle at upper right, and, in the distance, Mount Fuji. As in many of Hiroshige's compositions, the viewer is brought intimately onto the scene by the cropping of the image of the bridge's span. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The winter group, numbers 99 through 118, begins with a scene of Kinryuzan Temple at Akasaka, with a red-on-white color scheme that is reserved for propitious occasions. Snow immediately signals the season and is depicted with particular skill: individual snowflakes drift through the gray sky, while below, on the roof of a distant temple, dots of snow are embossed for visual effect. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art nam

Landscapes after old masters dated 1692 leaves a, o, p by Wang Hui Chinese This album contains paintings by Wang Hui and four of his students. In 1692, Wang was organizing a major imperial commission to commemorate the Kangxi Emperors 1689 Southern Inspection Tour, a visit to the empires south. As the workshop master, Wang had to find worthy assistants, and this collaborative piece seems to have played a role in the selection, as the four students who worked on this album would go on to assist with the Southern Inspection Tour handscrolls. The album may also have been part of a training process wherein Wang molded his assistants styles into a single coherent voice.. Landscapes after old masters 65075

The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series opens with spring. Scenes 1 though 42 represent the First to the Third Months, which are considered in Japan to be the spring season. Typically, early spring is marked by the festivities celebrated at the New Year, which begins the season. Blossoming plum trees are associated with the middle of spring, signifying the end of the cold weather and the beginning of the warm season. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. Sudden Shower at Shōno, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō 1834-35 Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese One of the best-known scenes from this series, Sudden Shower at Shōno demonstrates Hiroshige's genius at capturing the sensation of a violent rainstorm. Palanquin bearers and villagers dash through the storm, and sheets of rain are represented with distinct slanted lines. Shōno had no view to match the scenery shown here, and it appears that the design was purely imaginary. The umbrella at the lower right bears two inscriptions: "Takenouchi" is the family name of the publisher of this Tōkaidō series, and "Gojūsan-tsugi" (meaning "fifty-three stations") is part of the title. Utagawa Hiroshige, one of Japan's foremost landscapists, designed two extremely popular series: Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.. Okazaki: A daimyo's cortege crossing the bridge over the Yahagi River towards the village and castle on the further bank; in the background a blue hill, printed from colour blocks only. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, was born in the castle shown in the prints. The bridge over the Yahagi River, flowing west of the castle, was the largest on the entire highway. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.

They are the work of indigo dyers, most likely destined to be cut into towels, tenugui, which men tie around their heads during autumn festivals. Hiroshige positions us in Konya-chō, literally 'blue stores quarter,' a street dominated by professional dyers in Kanda, a neighborhood in Edo (present-day Tokyo) that was home to many craftsmen. In pre-modern times, it was common for artisans to cluster by trade, allowing for shared access to resources and some collective bargaining power when setting values on their wares.

Tsuchiya Koitsu was an artist of the Shin Hanga movement. Shin hanga ('new prints') was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th-19th century). The movement flourished from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meishō), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds and flowers (kachōga). Ushigome (込) is the name of a neighborhood in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and a former ward (込区 Ushigome-ku) in the now-defunct Tokyo City.
