Hiroshige described Ryōgoku Bridge as "the liveliest place in the Eastern Capital, with side-shows, theaters, story-tellers, and summer fireworks; day and night, the amusements never cease." Despite the festivities, the artist offers a peaceful, almost stylized, depiction of the place, with only a modest sense of its celebrated bustle. On the river is an assortment of cargo and passenger boats. Below is a row of riverside tea stalls where one could relax, much as in a modern Tokyo coffee shop. Asian Art 8th month of 1856

Color woodblock print; sheet: 22.6 x 35.5 cm (8 7/8 x 14 in.). The coastal town of Kambara rarely experiences snowfall. Illustrating falling snow is particularly suited to woodblock prints. The snowflakes are created by carving their shapes out of the woodblock. When the surface of the block is inked and printed, the carved areas are represented by the unprinted white paper. This print may be the first by Hiroshige to depict falling snow.

Yoshida: Bridge over the Toyo River, and in the right foreground workmen repairing the castle. This station flourished following the erection of the castle in 1505. Here a bridge was allowed to be built over the river flowing west of the station. The town has now grown to become Toyohashi City. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.

To the right is the huge main hall and the towering five-story pagoda of Asakusa Kannon Temple (formerly known as Kinryūzan Sensōji), the most ancient and popular Buddhist temple in the city. Nihonbashi: View looking across Nihon Bridge, Edo, from whence all distances were measured with a daimyo's cortege coming into view over the summit. In the foreground is a group of five fish-vendors (and a sixth partly hidden) getting out of the way, on the left, and two dogs on the right. This bridge was located in the centre of Edo and was the starting point of the Tokaido Highway. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.
