Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine, in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari. First and foremost, Inari is the kami of rice, but merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshiped Inari as the patron of business. Each of the tori at Fushimi Inari-taisha has been donated by a Japanese business. The shrine became the object of imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami decreed that messengers carry written accounts of important events to the guardian kami of Japan. The earliest structures were built in 711 on the Inariyama hill in south-western Kyoto, but the shrine was re-located in 816 on the request of the monk Kukai. The main shrine structure was built in 1499.

The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century. The Old Town of Lijiang dates back more than 800 years and was once an important town on the old Tea Horse Road.

The Kaiyuan Temple is a Buddhist temple originally constructed in 738 CE during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). Chaozhou is believed to have been founded more than 1700 years ago. The town reached its zenith during the Ming era and was well known as a place of great culture as well as an important commercial and trading centre. Teochew dialect, by which the Chaozhou culture is conveyed, is one of the most conservative Chinese dialects because it preserves many contrasts from ancient Chinese that have been lost in some of the other modern dialects of Chinese.
