Kabuki Actor ca. 1708 Attributed to Torii Kiyonobu I Japanese Kiyonobu, founder of the Torii line of artists, specialized in the painting of posters and signboards for the popular Kabuki theater. As required by the poster format, the bold, fluid lines, full, rounded forms, and flattened patterning were to be read at a distance. Kiyonobu's early experimentation with hand coloring was undertaken to enliven the stark black and white designs and to further the print's decorative appeal.Kiyonobu's masterful depiction of a dancer recalls Moronobu's expressive portrayal of lovers in this exhibition. Both convey a freedom of spirit and emotion through the use of vibrant, expressive line. In a manner unique to the early ukiyo-e style, Kiyonobu animates the dancer's robe with fluid lines, swirling patterns, and floral motifs to suggest her exuberant movement and essential vitality.. The warrior Taro Yoshikado appears at a temple before a frog sage to ask for supernatural powers to avenge the murder of a warlord. Princess Takiyasha, the daughter of the deceased warlord, lives in hiding at the temple, honing her powers for the same purpose. She appears at the center, releasing a ghost from a chest. In the Yoshiwara District late 18th century Isoda Koryūsai Japanese The figures in this print are separated by a difference in scale as well as by physical barriers. The large figure in the foreground is a courtesan passing through the curtained door of a public bathhouse. Our attention, however, is drawn to the smaller-scale woman in the background who is framed within a latticed window. She is in a state of undress, but she is so eager to see who is in the entrance corridor that she has only half-covered herself with a cloth. She steadies herself with a hand on the window as she peers out. Traditionally, a bathing woman is an object of voyeurism. Koryūsai adds a twist to the theme by turning her into an observer as well.. Murasaki Shikibu (English: Lady Murasaki) (c. 973 c. 1014 or 1025) was a Japanese novelist, poet and lady-in-waiting at the Imperial court during the Heian period. She is best known as the author of The Tale of Genji, written in Japanese between about 1000 and 1012. Murasaki Shikibu is a nickname; her real name is unknown, but she may have been Fujiwara Takako, who was mentioned in a 1007 court diary as an imperial lady-in-waiting. She was raised in her father's household where she learned Chinese, the written language of government, from which women were traditionally excluded. She married in her mid to late twenties and gave birth to a daughter before her husband died, two years after they were married. It is uncertain when she began to write The Tale of Genji, but it was probably while she was married or shortly after she was widowed. Courtesan, early 1700s. Kaigetsudō Doshin (Japanese, active 1711-1736). Hanging scroll, ink and color on paper; painting only: 91.7 x 46 cm (36 1/8 x 18 1/8 in.); including mounting: 170.2 x 67.3 cm (67 x 26 1/2 in.). Kaigetsudo Doshin was one of five painters in a studio operating under Kaigetsudo Ando in the Asakusa area of Edo, today's Tokyo. Doshin, like the other members of the studio, adhered closely to Ando's style, as well as his specialization, portraits of high-ranking courtesans of the Yoshiwara district like this one. The paintings feature strong ink delineation of the subject's twisting form and bold patterns in the kimono, as well as the absence of any sort of setting. Unlike his master, who focused exclusively on painting, Doshin also produced woodblock prints. Production faltered after Ando was exiled in 1714 for his involvement in a scandal.

Bellflowers (Asagao), from the series Genji in Fashionable Modern Guise (Fūryū yatsushi Genji: Asagao) 1789-92 Chōbunsai Eishi 文斎栄之 Japanese In this “modernization” of Chapter 20, “Bellflowers,” Genji’s unsuccessful pursuit of Princess Asagao is given an Edo-period setting. The palace interior teems with stylish women, and Genji and Asagao are shown exchanging poems; in the tale, they do so only through intermediaries. The figures, tall and slender with refined features, are characteristic of Chōbunsai Eishi’s prints and paintings. As in other prints from this series of triptychs, the colors are limited, in this case to gray-blue, yellow, and a touch of green. In this respect they conform to the technique of beni-girai, or “avoiding red,” fashionable in the late 1700s..
