Koshikibu no Naishi (999-1025), from "Hyakunin Isshu" (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets) ca. 1768 Suzuki Harunobu Japanese Immortalized in the "Hyakunin Isshu" is the poetic exchange envision here between the lady-in-waiting Koshikibu and the courtier Fujiwara Sadayori. Both had been summoned to a poetry contest. Here, Koshikibu responds to his teasing suggestion that she needs help from her absent mother, the famous poetess Izumi Shikubu, with brilliant repartee. Fan Vendor 1790s Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese Fan vendors in Edo were reputedly fashionable, handsome boys who attracted girls' attention. This seems to be the case here, where the vendor is showing a fan painted with the face of the Zen master Daruma to a beautiful young woman. Utamaro, however, has depicted the painting on the fan with such vigor that the Daruma seems as animated as the figures in this scene. With his finger in his mouth in a traditional gesture of envy, he appears to be beside himself with jealousy over the flirting young couple. Date: ca. 1790-91.Torii Kiyonaga, also renowned for his portraits of actors, has wrapped this beautiful woman in bright silk robes. Her red outer robe is decorated with chrysanthemum roundels in delicate colors, her furisode (a kimono with long, swinging sleeves) of peach silk has orchid designs, and the cream underrobe and red undergarment add to the contrast with her black obi. Tall, stately, and slightly remote, the subject can be identified as a woman of high standing. The classical twofold screen behind her, decorated with a closed blind, further removes her from everyday life. Here the young monk has caught the attention of young women, who ogle him from indoors. He turns to watch the flight of a cuckoo bird (hototogisu), a symbol of "the fourth month," the beginning of summer, and fleeting love. The Courtesan Takihime and Attendants (from the series New Patterns of Young Greens), 1795. Chōbunsai Eishi (Japanese, 1756-1829). Color woodblock print; sheet: 38.8 x 26.1 cm (15 1/4 x 10 1/4 in.). The designs on Takihimes outer robe describes fragments of scenery—bridge, castle, wind-filled sails amid clouds—while her attendants robes are more conventionally decorated with scattered flowers. The tassels on their sleeves were worn only by young girls. All three wear the triple-fan crest of the Ogiya ("House of Fans") tea house on the shoulders of their kimono. The cartouche in the upper-right corner of the print identifies the series title and time of year. It is New Year, the same season depicted in Engetsudos scroll Courtesan and Attendants (see 1985.255). Courtesans strolling through the streets with their attendants were common sights during evening hours in the Yoshiwara.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (January 1, 1798 - April 14, 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.

Ichikawa Komazō III in the Role of Kameō with Iwai Kumesaburō in the Role of Kameō's Wife, Oyasu, from the Play Shunkan futatsu omokage 1798-99 Utagawa Toyokuni I Japanese Ichikawa Komazo III (1764-1838), part of Danjuro's troupe, became a popular actor with the nickname Hanataka ("high nose") Koshiro. (He was also known as Matsumoto Koshiro V.) This print portrays him in the role of Kameo, and Iwai Yonesaburo Kumesasburō plays his wife, Oyasu.
