Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (30 April 1839 - 9 June 1892) was a Japanese artist and Ukiyo-e woodblock print master. He is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese woodblock printing. He is additionally regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras - the last years of Edo period Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in new things from the rest of the world, but over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many aspects of traditional Japanese culture, among them traditional woodblock printing. By the end of his career, Yoshitoshi was in an almost single-handed struggle against time and technology. As he worked on in the old manner, Japan was adopting Western mass reproduction methods like photography and lithography. Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753 - October 31, 1806) was a Japanese printmaker and painter, who is considered one of the greatest artists of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). He is known especially for his masterfully composed studies of women, known as bijinga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. After Utamaro's death, his pupil, Koikawa Shunchi, continued to produce prints in the style of his mentor and took over the gi, Utamaro, until 1820. These prints, produced during that fourteen-year-period as if Utamaro was the artist, now are referred to as the work of Utamaro II. After 1820 Koikawa Shunchi changed his gi to Kitagawa Tetsugori, producing his subsequent work under that name.

Date: ca. 1767-68.On a misty spring day, two beauties stand under a parasol on a terrace near a torii gate in the old capital, Kyoto, viewing the cherry blossoms at their peak. Like fashion models, the two women show off their beautiful and elegant clothing. The woman on the left wears a kimono decorated with a design of pines on a sandy beach against a red ground and an obi with a bold pattern of checks. The other woman's kimono is decorated with chrysanthemums on a purple ground, and her obi has a striking design of "snow circles" (yukiwa) against a yellowish brown ground. Each protects her hair from dust with a white cloth, which is embossed. This scene is related to the famous waka poem by the monk Sosei, written across the top of the print:Looking far, I see willows and cherry blossoms mingling together--making

A girl steps onto a veranda after a bath to look at a pot of pinks. A warm breeze stirs the poem-strip tied to the windbell above her. Irises bloom in the pool in the background. The print has been identified as the summer subject in a set of four flowers representing each season and is considered to be one of Harunobus most enchanting designs. One of the most celebrated and productive of all ukiyo-e artists, Harunobu is widely recognized as the first Japanese printmaker to create designs by printing each color in the image with a different block. These prints came to be known as nishiki-e, or brocade pictures, suggesting their resemblance to the gorgeous brocades worn at the time. The embossing on the waves in the stream and on the flowers was created by using unpigmented blocks during the printing process.

The series to which this print belongs links classical poems by thirty-six of the most famous poets of ancient and medieval times with up-to-date images of young men and women in fashionable garb. Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
