These epic clashes were recorded in the Heike monogatari (Tales of Heike), a semi-historical account written in the early 13th century that has inspired countless paintings and dramatic plays ever since. The battle of Ichinotani, on the right, illustrates Minamoto Yoshitsune's daring attack of the Taira camp. By leading his warriors in a mounted charge down a steep mountain at daybreak, Yoshitsune successfully took the Taira troops by surprise, forcing them to flee by ship. Marking the new site for the capital at Hyogo by Yoshikazu Utagawa (active 1848-1863). Woodcut, colour, print of a man presenting a city plan to the emperor at court with many ministers seated nearby.

Net Fishing at Night on the Sumida River, c. 1800. Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, 1753-1806). Color woodblock print; sheet: 38.6 x 25.4 cm (15 3/16 x 10 in.). Pleasure-boating in the evening on the Sumida River to escape the summer’s heat was about as popular as viewing cherry blossoms in spring for Edo townspeople. The river also led the way to the Yoshiwara, the licensed brothel district. A boating party with courtesans and gentlemen jostles up next to a fishing boat. Utamaro enjoyed portraying a scene through the design of a fishing or mosquito net. The different colors of the net suggest these impressions may be from two different series.

Yoshiwara: A road lined with trees running through ricefields, along which a man leads a horse carrying three women; Fuji in the distance. This section of highway was lined with pine trees for the comfort of travellers. Through the trees, Mount Fuji was seen on the left-hand side of the highway and was popularly called 'left Fuji'. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.

Minamoto no Yorimitsu (948 - August 29, 1021), also known as Minamoto no Raiko, served the regents of the Fujiwara clan along with his brother Yorinobu, taking the violent measures the Fujiwara were themselves unable to take. He is one of the earliest Minamoto of historical note for his military exploits, and is known for quelling the bandits of Oeyama. His loyal service earned him the governorships of Izu Province, Kozuke and a number of others in turn, as well as a number of other high government positions. Yorimitsu served as commander of a regiment of the Imperial Guard, and as a secretary in the Ministry of War. When his father Minamoto no Mitsunaka died, he inherited Settsu Province. Yorimitsu features in a number of legends and tales, including the legend of Kintaro (Golden Boy aka Sakata no Kintoki), the legend of Shuten Doji, and the legend of Tsuchigumo.

Zhang Xuan, who flourished during the reign of Tang Emperor Xuanzong (712-756), painted many pieces of art, one of his best known paintings is Court Ladies Preparing Newly-Woven Silk, of which a single copy survives painted by Emperor Huizong of Song (r. 1100-1125) in the early 12th century. He also painted the Spring Outing of the Tang Court, which was later remade by Li Gonglin.

At Sea off Kazusa (Kazusa no kairo), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei) ca. 1830-32 Katsushika Hokusai Japanese The mast and sails of the large junk in the foreground create an interesting play of triangular forms that reflect and frame the form of Fuji in the distance. The deep blue hue of the water in the foreground of the print finds a visual counterpoint in the inky blue band that reaches across the horizon and sky. This repetition of color serves to flatten out the scene, bridging the distance between near and far. A shoreline and tiny sailboats range along the horizon, which is subtly curved.. Date: 18th century.A sumptuous estate, including a bridge and pavilion over a lake, is set off by a shimmering gilded background and golden clouds and enlivened by cavorting children. The conventional motif of One Hundred Children has obvious auspicious connotations in the Chinese tradition. Here, the ancient subject is combined with the moralizing theme of the Four Gentlemanly Accomplishments (calligraphy, painting, music, and the game of go), which engage the children. One Hundred Children became one of the most popular themes among the Kano painters, the official artists who worked for the shoguns and their vassals during the Edo period. The anonymous painter of this screen seems to have based it on a readily available model. The dry, mannered execution of the landscape elements points to a date in the eighteenth century for this work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
