This scene portrays samurai retainers practicing military skills at the Takata Riding Grounds in the hilly northwestern suburbs of Edo. It is a reminder that half of Edo's population consisted of a hereditary warrior class that, even after more than two centuries of peace, was still expected to maintain its military skills. The practice of the martial arts was on the rise at the time this print appeared, reflecting a mounting foreign crisis and a heightened governmental emphasis on education and training. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’ is an ukiyo-e’ series of large, color woodblock prints by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). The series depicts Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of places and distances. It actually consists of 46 prints created between 1826 and 1833. The first 36 were included in the original publication and, due to their popularity, 10 more were added after the original publication. Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707-08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 km southwest of Tokyo. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone is a well-known symbol and icon of Japan and is frequently depicted in art and photographs. It is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains’ along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. Fuji is nowadays frequently visited by sightseers and climbers. Tsuchiya Koitsu was an artist of the Shin Hanga movement. Shin hanga ('new prints') was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th-19th century). The movement flourished from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meishō), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds and flowers (kachōga).

Spanning Edo's widest river, the Sumida, this bridge was one of the largest and most beautiful bridges in the capital. Hiroshige focuses on the dynamic forms of the strut system supporting the bridge, a symbol of modern Edo technological advances.Also symptomatic of Edo modernity was the development of recreational boating for the middle class. While the passengers enjoyed the Sumida River from covered gondolas (yakatabune) such as those seen here, the bridge piers would cut the landscape into unexpected shapes.Hiroshige depicts just such a scene here; the double-x form of the Ryōgoku bridge foundation is strikingly superimposed on a backdrop of a full moon and zigzagging clouds hovering over the watersurface.Although Hiroshige's use of the pseudonym "Ichiyūsai" as his signature indicates a date fairly early in his career, the bold c

Long strips of freshly dyed cotton fabric hang from drying platforms erected high above dyers' shops in the Kanda district. Monogrammed fabric strips in the center dominate the composition. One bears the "fish" mark of the publisher of the series, Uoei, cleverly written so that it resembles the word for "we," pronounced "ue" and hence an abbreviation of "Uoei." The strips in the background bear the lozenge-shaped mark of Hiroshige; the inner shape reads "hi," the outer square "ro": "Hiro" shige. Evening outings in pleasure boats on the Sumida River were taken along the many famous bridges of Edo, where endless varieties of entertainment were offered. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.

Against the background of the Imadogawa, a tributary of the Sumidagawa, Hokusai portrayed two potters whose elastic bodies are uniquely stretched. Even though there is no author's signature, the rhythmically fluctuating brushwork in the folds of the potters' robes suggests that it was made during the artist's Sori period 1794-1804). (36.1 x 23.1 cm). One can almost hear the crack of thunder as the roiling black clouds burst into sheets of heavy rain, scattering the huddled shapes on the bridge below. On the blue-gray expanse of the Sumida River, a solitary boatman poles his log raft downstream past the area known as Atake, impervious to the storm. This is a yūdachian "evening descent" of the thunder goda summer rain in which the heavens suddenly darken late in the day, releasing torrents of rain in large drops that then quickly clear.
