Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Nobility in the Evening Cool (Koki nōryō no zu) 1887 Yōshū (Hashimoto) Chikanobu Japanese Chikanobu became the most popular print artist of beauties during the Meiji period by depicting the Japanese nobility. Although the women in these polychrome prints wear Western hairstyles and dresses, their faces still resemble the traditional beauty ideal of the Edo period. Here, he pays careful attention to realistic details, such as the delicate moonlight, subtle gradation of gray in the night sky, pink flames in the gaslight of the lamppost, and burnished lilacs on the ladies dresses.. The Dutch traders or merchants depicted in this scene would most probably have been working with the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which had established a monopoly on trade with Japan provided the Europeans maintained their barracks and trading post off the mainland in Dejima. The traders in this picture were presumably on a rare sojourn into Nagasaki where they encountered the charming local geisha ladies. Dejima, or Deshima (literally Exit Island’), is a small artificial island built in the bay of Nagasaki in 1634 during the Edo period. Dejima was built to constrain foreign traders as part of sakoku’, a self-imposed isolationist policy. Originally built to house Portuguese traders, it changed to a Chinese and Dutch trading post from 1641 until 1853 during which time the Dutch mostly bartered for Japanese gold, silver and copper with East Indies’ spices, Indian cloth and Chinese silk and porcelain. Dejima Dutch Trading Post has since been designated a Japanese national historic si
