The Tokaido road connected Edo to Kyoto, running along the Pacific coast. Along the route stood fifty-three post towns, each of which is depicted in this series. Hiroshiges first journey on the Tokaido in 1832 inspired him to embark on this project, which is also known as the Hoeido Tokaido, after the publisher. The series brought unmatched fame to Hiroshige as a landscape designer. This image is the first in the series but comes from a later edition in which figures were added to the crowd of vendors in the foreground; it depicts a feudal procession led by standard-bearers coming over the bridge. The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaid ( Kiso Kaid Rokujky-tsugi) or Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Road, is a series of ukiyo-e works created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). There are 71 total prints in the series (one for each of the 69 post stations and Nihonbashi; Nakatsugawa-juku has two prints). The common name for the Kiso Kaid is 'Nakasend' or 'Central Mountain Highway', so this series is also commonly referred to as the Sixty-nine Stations of the Nakasend. The Nakasend was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capitol of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Nakasend connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. It was an alternate route to the Tkaid and travelled through the central part of Honsh, thus giving rise to its name, which means 'Central Mountain Road'. Honmyi -ji is a Buddhist temple of the Nichiren sect, Rokuji mon-ryu, in Nishi-ku, Kumamoto, Japan. It is the most high ranking temple of the sect in Kyushu. In Honmyi -ji is the grave of Kati Kiyomasa, (1562-1611), a Japanese daimyo, builder of Kumamoto Castle and a dedicated buddhist of Nichiren Buddhism. Kitao Shigemasa (1739 - March 8, 1820) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist from Edo. He was one of the leading printmakers of his day, but his works have been slightly obscure. He is noted for paintings of geisha. He was taught by Shigenaga and has been referred to as 'a chameleon' who adopted to changing styles. He was less active after the rise of Torii Kiyonaga and produced relatively few works considering the length of his career. He is also noted for his haikai (poetry) and shodi (Japanese calligraphy). In his later years he used the studio name Kosuisai.

Rather than presenting the scenes in the order in which they appear in the story, however, the artist presents them in seasonal order from right to left, as Japanese viewers would read them. The artist begins with mid-spring in the upper right corner, where a group of young men play kemari (a game similar to hacky sack) in a grove of cherry trees in full bloom, a scene from chapter 34. Five additional scenes in the right screen take place in late spring and early summer. In the far right panels of the left screen, autumn grasses and maple leaves announce the arrival of fall. Wintry scenes from chapters 6 and 51 are depicted at far left, where trees and rooftops are blanketed in snow.

Spring and Autumn Farming, 1700s. Kō Sūkoku (Japanese, 1730-1804). Pair of six-panel folding screens, ink, light color, gold, and silver on paper; overall: 170.2 x 353.5 cm (67 x 139 3/16 in.). These screens present the cycle of the farming year, starting with spring at right and ending with fall at left. Close examination of these screens reveals moments of games and amusement, the enjoyment of meals as well as intellectual and spiritual pursuits interspersed among the scenes of cultivating and preparing the rice harvest.The artist K Skoku is considered the 18th-century heir in style and attitude to Hanabusa Itch (1652- 1724). Itch’s work incorporated elements from Kano school, ukiyo-e, and literati styles of painting. K trained with one of Hanabusa’s pupils, Sawaki Sshi, who was best known for scenes depicting everyday life and customs.
