Three groups of courtesans stand on a balcony, and the tops of the blossoming cherry trees in the courtyard are visible behind them. The silhouettes visible across the courtyard reinforce the almost claustrophobic lack of privacy afforded by these pleasure houses. Utamaro's inscriptions describe the various reactions people have when intoxicated. They are, from right to left: anger, crying, and laughter. Adachi Ginko was a Japanese artist best known for his prints in the ukiyo-e style as a member of the Utagawa school. He worked in a variety of genres, including portraits of beauties and actors, landscapes, book illustrations, and satirical works, and produced a large number of triptychs of contemporary events. His most successful work was his Pictorial Outline of Japanese History series of triptychs in the late 1880s. He was jailed and fined in 1889 for caricaturing Emperor Meiji. Ginko also worked under the art names Shosetsusai, Shinsho, and Shosai.

Painting the Eyes on a Snow Rabbit ca. 1780 Isoda Koryūsai Japanese During the Edo period, as a winter amusement, children often made snow sculptures and the two most popular types were the snow rabbit (yuki usagi) and the snow Daruma (yuki Daruma). This image transports a childrens outdoor pastime into an elegant interior setting where a woman, probably the boys mother, paints on the eyes of a snow rabbit he holds on a lacquer tray. The seated woman wears an obi decorated with chrysanthemum flowers, while the standing younger woman has a kimono with summer hydrangeas—a reminder that people often wore garments with unseasonal references to distract from frigid or humid weather. Instead of using berries to fashion the eyes of the snow rabbit, they are being painted on as if it were a Daruma figure, on which one eye is painted when setting a goal or making a wish. Samurai and Wakashu early 18th century Miyagawa Issh Miyagawa Issh, unlike most artists of the Ukiyo-e school, did not design woodblock prints but focused exclusively on creating deluxe paintings depicting kabuki actors, courtesans, geisha, sumo wrestlers, as well as more risqué erotic images. He studied under Miyagawa Chshun (1682-1752), who had been strongly influenced by the pioneering ukiyo-e artist Hishikawa Moronobu, and Issh’s works reflects the stylistic mannerisms of that lineage. Most surviving paintings by Issh, including this one, date to the early eighteenth century, especially from around the Kyh era (1716-1736).Here the artist has create a rare image of two men, one young one older. Each of the thirty leaves captures a scene of bygone Japan. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in vernacular Chinese.

Date: ca. 1780.During the Edo period, as a winter amusement, children often made snow sculptures and the two most popular types were the snow rabbit (yuki usagi) and the snow Daruma (yuki Daruma). This image transports a children's outdoor pastime into an elegant interior setting where a woman, probably the boy's mother, paints on the eyes of a snow rabbit he holds on a lacquer tray. The seated woman wears an obi decorated with chrysanthemum flowers, while the standing younger woman has a kimono with summer hydrangeas--a reminder that people often wore garments with unseasonal references to distract from frigid or humid weather.
