The subtle play of meaning between the collecting of shells and the collecting of poetry--a box of shells becomes a visual metaphor for an anthology of poetry--is particularly pleasing. The joyous mood is echoed by two figures in the foreground playing the fox game (kitsune-ken). Another young woman, with a three-stringed samisen in her left hand, watches their game. On the floor between the contestants are a kettle and a stand holding a sake cup.The basic idea of kitsune-ken is that three hand gestures symbolize a village chief, a gun, and a fox. Each has a different potential: the chief is superior to the gun since he employs it, the gun to the fox because it can kill the fox, and the fox to the chief because it can bewitch him. Kiyomizu Komachi 1790s Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese Utamaro plays with the device of framing in this print of a woman playing mekakushi, blindman's buff, with two small children. The tsuitate screen, which defines the space between the interwoven figures, gives the print its sophisticated complexity. As the woman momentarily observes the children through the tsuitate, which is equipped with a sliding paper door, she is framed in a sort of bijin-e, as portraits of beauties were called, which gives the print its title. Local belles were called Komachi after a ninth-century poetess renowned for her beauty. At the same time, the screen accentuates the separation between the woman and the children. The children are completely absorbed in the excitement of the game, whereas the woman is self-conscious because she is an adult playing the part of a child. Poem by Fujiwara no Motozane (ca. 860) from the Series Thirty-Six Poets ca. 1768 Suzuki Harunobu Japanese In this illustration of daily life, Harunobu captures a mother's affection for her child. While hanging clothes to dry on a bamboo rod, she follows her son with her eyes as he chases a chick. Looking over her shoulder, she then turns and reaches as if to restrain him.Shown in full bloom along the fence are white unohana flowers, which symbolize the fourth month of the lunar calendar, or early summer. Here, Harunobu associates the white blossoms and tenderness with a classical poem by one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, Fujiwara no Motozane, inscribed in a cloud-shaped cartouche at the top. The lyricism of the poem resonates with the expressive quality of the mother-and-child scene:Blossoming now in our mountain village, the unohana flowers look like snow still lingering on the hedge.(trans. by Jack Hillier). A God Playing a Flute from the series The Spring Cave, 1825. Totoya Hokkei (Japanese, 1780-1850). Color woodblock print; sheet: 18.8 x 21.4 cm (7 3/8 x 8 7/16 in.). These elegant surimono prints come from a set of five images inspired by the legend of the Shinto Supreme Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. She was once so offended by her brother that she retreated into a cave, leaving the earth in darkness. Several attempts to lure her out with cocks crowing, music-making, and a goddess dancing failed, but a mirror hung from a nearby tree made Amaterasu curious, bringing her to the entrance of the cave. A stone was quickly placed at the entrance to block her way back into the cave, and light was restored to the world. Each print is set against a blue evening sky with embossed clouds enriched with gold, silver, and copper.

Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.
