Blowing Soap Bubbles Under the Plum Blossom Suzuki Harunobu Japanese In this print the device is again employed of a classical poem incorporated into a cloudlike formation at the top. The poem reads, freely: "I do not want my mind to be tainted by the smell and color of the plums, but the wind stealthily carries the mysterious scent and color into my sleeve." Under a plum blossom tree, a mother blows bubbles as her son watches with amusement. The use of the plum, a symbol of sexuality and eroticism, coupled with the mother's activity and the child's celebratory dancing, seems to suggest the act of procreation and the value of maternity.. Two Women with a Baby who is Playing on the Floor ca. 1793 Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese Two women are playing with a baby. The mother, whose exposed breasts are accented with pink, gazes down at her son; meanwhile, he looks up her kimono. Through the diaphanous material we see both the child's head and the mother's leg. Utamaro accommodated the vertical format of the print by cropping the image at each side.Here, as in many other prints in this exhibition, the artist covers the woman's legs but emphasizes her naked breasts. "With their obvious sexuality designed to feed erotic fantasies, these images may have served as a substitute for shunga, or explicitly erotic prints, whose publication was illegal.. Evening Chime of the Clock (Tokei no banshō), from the series Eight Parlor Views” (Zashiki hakkei) ca. 1766 Suzuki Harunobu Japanese The orderly composition of this scene, with architectural elements arranged in parallel diagonals, reveals a private room and courtyard behind a roofed wall covered with vines. In the tightly organized space, a woman in a loose garment sits on the veranda after her bath. The maid turns her head toward the clock, partially seen at left, at the moment it strikes the hour. The woman, though listening to the clock, seems preoccupied. The traditional representation of the "evening bell" in this print from the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers appears in the pagoda of a temple in the distance. Here, the clock stands in for the temple bell. Again, there is a subtle suggestion of a romantic narrative; the strikes of the clock may remind the woman of a lover's impending visit. Young Woman with a Lantern. Harunobu is celebrated for being the first in Japan to use the full-colour printing technique. His prints were highly popular in his days and often depict adolescent female figures - like this girl quietly leaving a house at dusk. Like many famous Japanese printmakers specializing in prints of actors, landscape prints or pictures of beautiful women, Harunobu also worked in the shunga (erotic print) genre.

Nishiki-e were a type of multi-coloured woodblock print from Japan. The technique was primarily used in ukiyo-e, and was invented in the 1760s. Before this woodblock prints were usually in black-and-white and were coloured either by hand or with the addition of one or two colour ink blocks, but nishiki-e printing changed that. Nishiki-e was credited to an engraver named Kinroku, but it was popularised and perfected by Suzuki Harunobu. Nishiki-e is sometimes also known as Edo-e, and became very popular during the Meiji Period, especially during the first Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), where over 3,000 prints were made in that 9-month period.
