The Tokaido road connected Edo to Kyoto, running along the Pacific coast. Along the route stood fifty-three post towns, each of which is depicted in this series. Hiroshiges first journey on the Tokaido in 1832 inspired him to embark on this project, which is also known as the Hoeido Tokaido, after the publisher. The series brought unmatched fame to Hiroshige as a landscape designer. This image is the first in the series but comes from a later edition in which figures were added to the crowd of vendors in the foreground; it depicts a feudal procession led by standard-bearers coming over the bridge. This scene depicts three people playing a game in which three players make hand gestures simultaneously. The relationship among the gestures determines the winner. Known as hand games, during the eighteenth century they were popular in Japan among courtesans. In this version, the contestants use both hands, indicating a special variation such as the fox hand game, which features gestures for a fox, a village leader, and a hunter.

Act 3 (Sandanme), from the series The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers (Chushingura) 1829-1844 Japan. Outside a shogunal mansion in Kamakura, Honzo has brought gifts for Lord Kira on behalf of Lord Wakasa. Wakasa was offended by Kiraís treatment of the two lords and thus threatened to kill Kira. These gifts greatly pleased Kira, known for his love of gold.. Because Lord Asano did not match this largess, and because of Asanoís wife earlier rejection of Kira, he continued to insult and taunt Asano. The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaid ( Kiso Kaid Rokujky-tsugi) or Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Road, is a series of ukiyo-e works created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). There are 71 total prints in the series (one for each of the 69 post stations and Nihonbashi; Nakatsugawa-juku has two prints). The common name for the Kiso Kaid is 'Nakasend' or 'Central Mountain Highway', so this series is salso commonly referred to as the Sixty-nine Stations of the Nakasend. The Nakasend was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capitol of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Nakasend connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. It was an alternate route to the Tkaid and travelled through the central part of Honsh, thus giving rise to its name, which means 'Central Mountain Road'. Description on verso of mount as follows: 'Beauties impersonating the eight sennin - Immortals. Kinto beauty on carp-steed located in center which she conjures a small horse. In front of the carp, Chinnan, holding a bowl from which issues a column of smoke enveloping a dragon. At her right sits Tekkai breathing forth a diminutive reproduction of herself. To the right, and facing the latter, stands Korejin with his tiger companion, the tail of which rises - true to tradition - in a sweeping curve back of the lady's head. The small government checkpoint at Sho_no, lacking any distinguishing physical landmark, allowed him to concentrate on rendering a rainstorm. Fine diagonal lines arranged in irregular bands effectively convey the sheets of rain that pelt the travelers along the roadway. The distant bamboo grove, too, convincingly portrays the gusting wind. Through the postures of the travelers, Hiroshige further suggests the ferocity of the storm. The palanquin bearers carefully maintain a steady gait on the wet road, while the figures descending the hill break into a run as the maelstrom intensifies.
