Beautiful Woman 18th century Kaigetsudō Dohan Japanese Kaigetsudō's vision of female beauty, though well received, was quite bold compared to that of his contemporaries. Statuesque figures colorfully dressed in striking patterns were the perfect foil for grand sweeps of his brush. This physically substantial femininity stands in stark contrast to the willowy figures favored by Suzuki Harunobu (1724-1770), a contemporary ukiyo-e artist who was also popular.. In a Pleasure House late 18th century Torii Kiyonaga Japanese The principal figure in this composition is a courtesan who has paused in front of a folding screen. With her head inclined and her hand resting on the edge of the screen, she stands in an attitude of watching. The cropping necessitated by the narrow format adds mystery to this scene because the object of the courtesan's gaze is beyond the border of the print. In the background another courtesan tenderly observes her sleeping lover. The supple willow is a symbol of feminine grace as well, and the prominence of the umbrella is an effective compositional device. Beauty with Demons 18th century Suzuki Harunobu Japanese In stunning contrast, Harunobu's satiric treatment of the subject transforms the solemn guardian deity Shki into a chicken-hearted Peeping Tom. Instead of repelling an evil spirit, Shki assigns to it the role of a love-letter messenger. Standing on a craggy overhang with his finger in his mouth, a traditional gesture of envy and desire, he lowers the small demon with a folded letter to an unsuspecting woman by the shore, who is absolutely absorbed in pinning up her hair. Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - January 12, 1865) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. A speciality was bijin, or woodblock prints of beautiful women, as here.

The caption for this image reads: ToyokuniManzai (New Year) Dancers. He was recognized as a master of ukiyo-e and he was especially known for his kabuki actor prints. He lived 1769 to 1825. The ukiyo-e style was popular between the 17th and 19th centuries. The term translates as "pictures of the floating world." There were wood prints, as well as paintings of female beauties actors, sumo wrestlers, historical scenes, folk tales, travel, landscape, flowers.

The Actor Bando Hikosaburo 2nd as an Oiran in a Gauze Kimono, Standing, Tying Her Obi ca. 1764 Torii Kiyomitsu Japanese As color began to transform the use of line, a new format emerged that also ushered in additional compositional possibilities. The pillar print, an elongated rectangle that refers to the traditional scroll, featured young women partially concealed from the viewer. Their allusiveness adds a certain mystery and allure to the subjects, whose preoccupations with the transaction of love letters and reflections on womanhood reinforce their introspection.The process of color printing also changed the relationship of parts to whole in the pictorial conception, as was noted in Masanobu's pioneering work. Kiyomitsu intensifies the new mode of color orchestration by intentionally cropping the figure, suggesting a scenario that may only be completed with the passage of time.
