Standing Courtesan ca. 1720 Tsend Rif The artist has captured the elegant appearance of a woman, probably a high-ranked courtesan, in elegant robes and long, flowing hair tied with paper ribbons. Tsend Rifu was among the specialist ukiyo-e painters who emerged from the Kaigetsud studio and emulated its style of rendering beauties of the pleasure quarter. The painting has an inscription, added after the painting was created, by Kamo no Suketame, a Shinto priest and noted poet of a generation or two after the artist was active. His gentle, curvilinear calligraphy reflects the influence of the prevalent Reizei courtly style of the Edo period. It was a common practice for owners of paintings to ask prominent literati of their day to inscribe a painting in a distinctive hand in order to add another level of enjoyment to the work. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Here (from left to right) are ladies of the warrior class, wives of merchants, young maidens, working girls, and women in the demimonde. Sokens extraordinary brush control and use of pigments can be seen in the delicate hairlines and the texture of complexions and make-up. The son of a kimono merchant, he depicted magnificent kimono with delicate folds suggesting the body under the fabric.

Yashima Gakutei was a Japanese artist and poet who was a pupil of both Totoya Hokkei and Hokusai. Gakutei is best known for his kyoka poetry and surimono woodblock works.

Nishikawa Sukenobu designed illustrations for a large number of picture books featuring elegantly clad, sweet-faced women. Although he did not design any single-sheet prints, he was renowned in his lifetime for his meticulously rendered and elegant paintings. Here, Sukenobu depicts a fashionable young woman wearing a loose outer robe (uchikake) with a pattern of willow trees, over a red crepe kimono. She pauses to read a poem card (tanzaku) that has been attached to the branch of a flowering cherry tree.

Courtesans Promenading on the Nakanocho, c. 1790. Utagawa Toyokuni (Japanese, 1769-1825). Triptych: color woodblock print; sheet: 37.5 x 25.4 cm (14 3/4 x 10 in.). The Nakanocho was the main street in the famous Yoshiwara pleasure district, a walled enclosure that housed as many as 4,000 courtesans during its height. In the early evening, elaborately dressed courtesans, accompanied by attendants, promenaded on the main thoroughfare, as in this scene. On the left side of the street, an unaccompanied courtesan holding a long, slender pipe lounges on a porch and converses with another courtesan. At the right, a pair of courtesans attract the attention of two men, one presumably a samurai who wears a hooded cloak and hides his face behind a fan. The open buildings with shop curtains hanging from their eaves are teahouses, establishments where men could arrange appointments with courtesans in the more prestigious brothels.
