Utagawa Kuniyoshi (January 1, 1798 - April 14, 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.

In this swaggering performance, he wears a kimono displaying a triangular pattern of scales, symbolizing a dragon or snake. This surimono of the fourth Danjūrō is from a series of portrait busts of Danjūrō I-VIII. Two Women Looking in Mirrors 19th century Kubo Shunman Japanese This composition is activated by a diagonal line formed by the darting gazes of the two women and the spectator. The standing woman looks at the reflection of her face while she also sees the reflection of the back of her head. Instead of looking at the mirror in her own hand, the seated woman gazes at the standing woman. Does she see her own reflection in the mirror that reflects the standing woman's coiffure Does the standing woman also see a reflection of the seated lady as well as the back of her head The seated lady holds a mirror, whose verso bears a family crest with two characters combined into a diphthong. Perhaps this wordplay mimicks the theme of overlap and duality conveyed by the use of three mirrors. Ichikawa Danjūrō VII as Arajishi Otokonosuke probably 1829 Utagawa Kunisada Japanese This image captures the moment of a Kabuki play just before the heroic samurai Arajishi Otokonosuke is about to strike with an iron fan his villainous adversary Nikki Danjō, who has magically transformed himself into a rat. The celebrated actor Ichikawa Danjūrō (1791-1859) is shown in his late thirties, at the peak of his fame, with his long, sharp nose even more distinct than the previous decade. The kumadori striped makeup, the wig, and costume with peony motif are associated with the role of Otokonosuke. This striking close-up portrait of the famous actor is one of Kunisadas most dynamic and sought-after surimono compositions, and is part of a diptych with the other showing an actor dressed as a rat. The print is exceedingly rare, and to our knowledge there is no collection that has both of the prints. The poems, highlighted in silver metallic pigment on the print, make subtle allusions to the plot
