Mystical Bird (Karyōbinga) 1820-33 Katsushika Hokusai Japanese This surimono New Year's card depicts a mystical Buddhist bird (karyōbinga in Japanese; kalavinca in Sanskrit) characterized by a bird's body and a human head. It is said that one can never tire of listening to the creature's heavenly music. The New Year's poems were inscribed by Nikyō and Kokusui.Hokusai's signature reads Hokusai aratame Iitsu ("Hokusai changed to Iitsu"). Woman with demon mask among the clouds. A female demon, disguised as a clean lady, holds a demon mask on a rainy night. The woman is played by actor Segawa Kikunojô v (1802-32) in the Kabuki Play Modoribashi. This piece is based on the Nôh play 'Rashômon', in which a man, Watanabe No Tsuna, meets a woman at the Ichijô Modori bridge. He recognizes the woman like Demoon and when she tries to kidnet him, he cuts her arm, after which she fly away. This is the upper sheet of a vertical dipper. With one poem.

Mountain Roses of Ide (Ide no Yamabuki), from the series A Parodic Six Jewel Rivers (Yatsushi Mu-Tamagawa) ca. 1795 Rekisentei Eiri 川亭永理 Japanese Each print in this series references one of the six rivers in various parts of Japan that are named Tamagawa, or Jewel River. The theme of six beautiful rivers, each associated with a flower and a classical court poem, enjoyed great popularity in the late Edo period, especially among ukiyo-e printmakers. Mountain roses (yamabuki) are associated with the Ide Tamagawa, near Kyoto. This series parodies the typical depiction by replacing a courtier-poet and his two assistants fording the Ide Tamagawa with a courtesan in a courtier’s cap and two female assistants.. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.
