Shared Feelings in the Bedchamber of Komurasaki and Gompachi ca. 1795 Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese This series involves an elaborate pun on the traditional Eight Views of Omi painting theme. Omi is both a place name and the phonetic reading of the characters for "lovers' meetings." In these prints, lovers made famous in joruri puppet plays and in the Kabuki theater are matched with sentiments created out of word play on each of the conventional titles of the eight scenes. This scene introduces the classic theme of a young betrothed couple torn between their mutual love for each other and the family loyalties that divide them. The samurai is Rikiya, one of Lord Asanoís retainers and the son of Kuranosuke, Chamberlain and leader of the forty-seven samurai retainers. His betrothed is Konami, daughter of Honzo, a chief retainer to the shogun. As Rikiya delivers the message to Honzoës wife that the provincial Lords Asano and Wakasa must appear at the shogunís court the next day, he (Rikiya) has the opportunity to see his beloved. Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753 - October 31, 1806) was a Japanese printmaker and painter, who is considered one of the greatest artists of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). He is known especially for his masterfully composed studies of women, known as bijinga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects.

Toyota Hokkei was a Japanese printmaker and book illustrator. He initially studied painting with Kano Yosen (1735-1808), the head of the Kobikicho branch of the Kano School and okaeshi (official painter) to the Tokugawa shogunate. The fan held in front of her chest is embellished with a view of Shinagawa bay, where the pleasure quarter at which she works is located. The poem inscribed on the fan describes her reputation as a beauty of the bay area, which was nicknamed 'the southern quarter' because it was located south of Edo castle. Beach landscapes, in general, were a popular subject for fan prints.

Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912), often known by his contemporaries as Yoshu Chikanobu, was a prolific woodblock artist active during the Meiji Era of Japan. He served as a soldier for the Tokugawa loyalists at first, but following the Shogitai's surrender, he was remanded to the Takada domain, and in 1875, he decided to become an artist. He soon become renowned as a highly skilled ukiyo-e artist, with his works ranging from Japanese mythology to depictions of the battlefields from the wars of his time to women's fashions and shunga (erotic art). He produced a great many war prints in triptych format, documenting the Satsuma Rebellion, the First Sino-Japanese War and the First Russo-Japanese War, among other conflicts and events.

Date: 1790s.Utamaro selectively used reflection to reinforce narrative and to emphasize themes. In this print, a standing woman holds up a mirror to a seated woman. Ironically, Utamaro chose to show the standing woman's reflection in the lacquered back of the mirror rather than the seated woman's in the mirror itself. The image involves a dual relationship: two women hold halves of the same object and perform a similar action.
