This view is to the northeast from the precincts of Yushima Tenjin Shrine, looking out over the Shinobazu Pond. The main sanctuary of the shrine is off to the left. Pictured is a side approach that could be reached by the two different stone stairways shown here, either the one on the lower right or the one by which the two figures in the center are ascending. Yushima Tenjin was one of the oldest shrines in Edo and was dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the patron saint of learning and the arts. It is still devoutly patronized by rich and poor alike. It is a clear, starlit evening on the Asakusa River. In the foreground is the famous Pine of Success, hanging out over the river and the two passing boats of the Oumayagashi Ferry. There is a subtle eroticism in this night scene. Can you locate the suggestive clues Enclosed in its own private space to the lower left is a roofed pleasure boat. Two pairs of clogs rest in the bow, hinting at a tryst on board, and barely perceptible is the faint silhouette of a woman's head and shoulders behind the lowered blinds. Fukuroi: Coolies resting by a wayside shelter, while a large kettle, hung from the branch of a tree, is boiling; a woman stirs the fire, while a coolie lights his pipe at it. Close against the tree stands a road direction post, and on the right is a bird perched upon a wayside noticeboard; behind are rice fields, at the edge of which stands the village. In this vicinity the highway passed through desolate fields and it was uncomfortable to journey along during the summer months. However, this district was renowned for its strong winds in winter when kite flying was a popular local pastime. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It irepresents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series continues with summer. Summer amusements of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Months are represented in numbers 43 through 72. Evening outings in pleasure boats on the Sumida River were taken along the many famous bridges of Edo, where endless varieties of entertainment were offered. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.

The Exile of Yukihira at Suma 1789 Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese Like his younger brother, Narihira, Yukihira came to be the hero of a romantic legend. By imperial edict, Yukihira was exiled from the capital to the lonely beach at Suma, which was famous as a beautiful spot for viewing the moon. There, the exiled courtier fell in love with Matsukaze and Murasame, two sisters who had fallen from their privileged position as daughters of the provincial governor because of the treachery of their cruel stepmother. On the beach at Suma, they were forced to live like peasants, carting and drying seawater to make salt.The depicts Yukihira's arrival with two attendants at the place of his exile. The plum garden of Kameido, sheet 30 from the series: 100 famous views of Edo. Utagawa Hiroshige is located next to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) to the large landscaping in the Japanese woodcut of the 19th century. This printing with the plum garden of Kameido shows in the foreground the branches of a tree lighter like a silhouette, which looks in a garden. This picture became famous in Europe by the copy in oil paints of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890). The painter was excited about the bold image clips, the composition and area layout of the Japanese masters and possessed hundreds of Japanese woodcuts. This sheet comes from the series "100 famous views of Edo", today's Tokyo.
