Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series opens with spring. Scenes 1 though 42 represent the First to the Third Months, which are considered in Japan to be the spring season. Typically, early spring is marked by the festivities celebrated at the New Year, which begins the season. Blossoming plum trees are associated with the middle of spring, signifying the end of the cold weather and the beginning of the warm season. Woodblock print, Image: 13 3/16 x 8 3/4 in. (33.5 x 22.2 cm). This scene depicts the area known as Yamashita ("Below the Mountain") in Ueno Park. The abstract band of pink and yellow represents the famous cherry blossoms of Kan'eiji Temple ("The Mountain"). The small shrine hidden in the woods is Gōjō Tenjin, and the adjacent restaurant is Iseya, which advertises a rice dish blended with pickled shiso, a minty herb. The procession of parasol-covered women in the lower left corner may be a group of ladies-in-waiting. Stopping to gaze at them is a group of commoners, somewhat awkwardly diminished in size. This print is one of three in the series that have been ascribed to Hiroshige II. Asian Art 10th month of 1858

Sunshower at Nihonbashi 1833-34 Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese In another version of one of Hiroshige's most effective compositional techniques, the view is from a bridge spanning Edo's Sumida River to another bridge. This bright, tranquil scene is an interesting contrast to the vigorous human and natural activity in Sudden Shower on the Great Bridge, shown to the right. In this horizontal composition, the bridge at Nihonbashi, the first stage of the route immortalized in his Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, is seen as rain begins to fall. Against the still light sky are glimpsed Edo's two other great sights, the Shogun's castle at upper right, and, in the distance, Mount Fuji. As in many of Hiroshige's compositions, the viewer is brought intimately onto the scene by the cropping of the image of the bridge's span.. Sunshower at Nihonbashi 36977

Ōmori, from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital, early 1830s. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797-1861). Color woodblock print; overall: 23.9 x 34.2 cm (9 7/16 x 13 7/16 in.). Sites around Edo (present-day Tokyo) were popular subjects of ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) prints in the early 1800s. The calligraphy in the red circle on the upper right is the title of the series, The Famous Places in the Eastern Capital. The mori district, on Edo Bay a few miles south of Edo, was known for its cultivation of nori, the crackly sheets of seaweed commonly wrapped around rice balls or sushi rolls. Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicted two women gathering seaweed from cultivation beds. One uses chopsticks, while the other gently rakes the seaweed into the baskets in their boat. The tip of another skiff behind the stand of plants on the right and the cultivation beds in the distance suggest the scale and importance of this industry.

Date: 1835-36.Kuniyoshi's series of ten prints published in 1835-36 was an abridged biography of the life of the monk Nichiren (1222-1282), the founder of the Nichiren Buddhist sect, which is based on the worship of the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren lived in exile on Sado Island from 1271 to 1274. This particular masterpiece of ukiyo-e printmaking creates a perfect resonance between pictorial and emotional presentation. The severe snowstorm symbolizes the hardships Nichiren underwent during his exile. The monk demonstrates his strength of spirit by persevering in his uphill struggle. Fuchu: A woman in a kago being carried across the Abe River; others fording the stream from the opposite bank; a range of mountains in the background. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, spent his childhood and retirement years here. The Abe River flows to the west of this station and travellers had to cross in a variety of ways, as depicted in the print. This station has become the present Shizuoka City. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige. The Ti kaidi (East Sea Road) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendi, the Ti kaidi travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honshu, hence the route's name.
