Two Ladies. Artist: Suzuki Harunobu (Japanese, 1725-1770). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 11 1/8 in. (28.3 cm); W. 8 1/8 in. (20.6 cm). Date: 1764-72.In 1765 Harunobu introduced nishiki-e, the polychrome woodblock print, adding further luxury and realism to ukiyo-e art. Although the use of reflection appeared in the earliest woodblock prints, the advent of color and use of embossing and mica enhanced the illusion represented by the mirror.In this print two courtesans gaze at each other through a mirror, using reflection as a means of communication. The artist enables the viewer to see both the back of the woman's head and her face at the same time. The portrayal reflects the tradition of women cutting the hair from the nape of the neck. A beautiful nape was essential to female beauty and was also considered an area of erotic charm.With the addition of the poem to his print, Harunobu heightens the power and narrative of his image. The poem reads, freely: "I do not want my mind to be tainted by the smell and color of the plums, but the wind stealthily carries the mysterious scent and color into my sleeve." Under a plum blossom tree, a mother blows bubbles as her son watches with amusement. The use of the plum, a symbol of sexuality and eroticism, coupled with the mother's activity and the child's celebratory dancing, seems to suggest the act of procreation and the value of maternity. Themes of surimono are often erudite, frequently alluding to Japanese literary classics in both texts and images.Though this print was created in the early nineteenth century, the artist has depicted a courtesan wearing styles popular a century before. The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (十七士 Shi-jū-shichi-shi), also known as the Forty-seven Samurai, the Akō vendetta, or the Genroku Akō incident (元禄赤穂事件 Genroku akō jiken) took place in Japan at the start of the 18th century. One noted Japanese scholar described the tale as the country's 'national legend'. It recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushidō. The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Kōzuke no suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for two years to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves ordered to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder.
