Chopsticks are short tapered sticks used in pairs of equal length, which are used as the traditional eating utensils of China, Mongolia, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Generally believed to have originated in ancient China, they can also be found in some areas of Tibet and Nepal that are close to Han Chinese populations, as well as areas of Thailand, Laos and Burma which have significant Chinese populations. Chopsticks are most commonly made of wood, bamboo or plastic, but are also made of metal, bone, ivory. Chopsticks are held in the dominant hand, between the thumb and fingers, and used to pick up pieces of food.

Evening Snow on the Heater late 18th century Suzuki Harunobu Japanese The interior scene in this print is fortified by double windows, both a series of bars and shoji sliding panels. The windows, however, are open. One woman, seated and holding a pipe, seems to expect that she will be seen by a man through the gaps and will be able to arrange an assignation. The other woman is making wadding by stretching sheets of floss silk over the lacquered dome-shaped heaters known as nurioke. Floss silk draped over a nurioke represents the "evening snow" in this print, one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, which originated in China and became popular in Japan. The karazuri embossing technique outlines the shape of the floss silk, emphasizing its softness. This print is not a first edition: Slight variations in color and patterns on the walls were added, and the seal of the commissioner, Kyosen, was omitted for the commercial product.. Katsukawa Shunshi (1726 - January 19, 1793) was a Japanese painter and printmaker in the ukiyo-e style, and the leading artist of the Katsukawa school. Shunshi studied under Miyagawa Shunsui, son and student of Miyagawa Chi shun, both equally famous and talented ukiyo-e artists. Shunshi is most well known for introducing a new form of yakusha-e, prints depicting Kabuki actors. However, his bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) paintings, while less famous, are said by some scholars to be 'the best in the second half of the 18th century'. Shunshi first came to Edo to study haiku and painting. He became a noted printmaker of actors with his first works dating from 1760. Though originally a member of the Torii school, he soon broke away and began his own style, which would later be dubbed the Katsukawa school. Among his students were the famous ukiyo-e artists Shunchi, Shun'ei, and Hokusai.

Lovers Walking in the Snow (Crow and Heron). Artist: Suzuki Harunobu (Japanese, 1725-1770). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 11 1/4 in. (28.6 cm); W. 8 1/8 in. (20.6 cm)medium-size print (chu-ban). Date: 1764-72.Of all ukiyo-e prints of lovers, this one creates the most romantic and melancholic mood. Harunobu emphasizes the intimacy of two lovers strolling in the snow, even suggesting perhaps a michiyuki, a path to a love suicide. The couple walk together in the quietly falling snow, in what is known as an ai ai gasa pose, literally, the sharing of an umbrella and love. Harunobu, the originator of the polychrome print, or nishiki-e, shows his mastery of color, rendering the couple's robes in paired black and white, characterized as "crow and heron." In contrast to the plain colors, he decorates both the inner robe and the obi of each figure with elaborate polychrome patterns. Embossing brings out the soft, flaky texture of the snow and the patterns of the woman's kimono and hood. This pr
