Woman and Attendant ca. 1795 Utagawa Toyokuni I Japanese Toyokuni was one of the most prolific artists of the late Edo period. During his early career, he portrayed women with particularly graceful necks, as exemplified by this image of a courtesan on her way to see her first customer of the evening by the light of a lantern held by an attendant. She is neatly dressed, with every hair in place. Red color applied here and there reveals her youth and vibrancy. On the upper section of the scroll, a poem by Shikiteri Sanba (1776-1822), a noted author of popular literature, is inscribed:Chosen for the first time,Before becoming accustomed,It is difficult to make footsteps in the snow.. Woman and Attendant. Utagawa Toyokuni I (Japanese, 1769-1825). Japan. ca. 1795. Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk. Edo period (1615-1868). Paintings

The Actor Segawa Kikunojō as a Courtesan of the Ōmiya Brothel ca. 1786 (Tenmei 6) Katsukawa Shunshō 川春章 Segawa Kikunojō III (1751-1810) was one of the top actors of his time in both male and female roles, but it was for his performances as an onnagata—especially in roles as courtesans and ingénues—that earned him the most acclaim. Here the character is bedecked in dramatic dragon robes, appropriate for a high-ranked courtesan. Here we have not yet been able to identify the play, but the entrance curtain behind the actor reads “Ōmiya,” recalling the name of the Naka-Ōmiya Brothel in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters.. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Young Woman Carries Adorned Pole for a Procession Utagawa Toyohiro (Japanese, 1773-1829). , ca. 1805-6. Woodblock print, narrow koban tate-e surimono-style printing, 9 1/4 x 3 3/8 in. (23.5 x 8.6 cm). Processions of the daimyos, or feudal lords, who frequently traveled with elaborate retinues from their home states to make appearances at the court of the shogun, provided popular spectacles for the people of Edo. Toyohiro often treated the theme of the daimyo procession, sometimes replacing members of a retinue with beautiful women who bear flags or other emblems of authority, such as the pole carried by this figure. This image comes from a series that included at least fifteen different designs. Asian Art ca. 1805-6

Torii Kotondo is known to have made only 21 prints - all of them images of bijin or beautiful women. They belong to the finest works of art of the Shin Hanga movement. Shin hanga ('new prints') was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th-19th century). The movement flourished from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meisho), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds and flowers (kachoga).

Oiran (魁) were the courtesans of Edo period Japan. The oiran were considered a type of yūjo (遊女) 'woman of pleasure' or prostitute. However, they were distinguished from the yūjo in that they were entertainers, and many became celebrities of their times outside the pleasure districts. Their art and fashions often set trends among the wealthy and, because of this, cultural aspects of oiran traditions continue to be preserved to this day. The oiran arose in the Edo period (1600-1868). At this time, laws were passed restricting brothels to walled districts set some distance from the city center. In the major cities these were the Shimabara in Kyoto, the Shinmachi in Osaka, and the Yoshiwara in Edo (present-day Tokyo). These rapidly grew into large, self-contained 'pleasure quarters' offering all manner of entertainments. Within, a courtesan’s birth rank held no distinction, which was fortunate considering many of the courtesans originated as the daughters of impoverished families who wer

Exposition poster art in Japan between approximately 1925 and 1941 mirrors the rapid militarisation of society and the growth of militarism, statism and fascism during the Showa Era. In the 1920s expo poster art features elements of modern art and even Art Deco. Themes are whimsical and outward looking, representing Japan's growing importance and influence in the world of international commerce and art. By the 1930s this kind of poster art had grown much more bleak, less concerned with human themes and more directed towards statism and social control. Feminine imagery disappears to be replaced by wheels of industry, with distinct similarities to contemporary Nazi art in Fascist Germany. From the outbreak of full scale hostilities with China through to Pearl Harbour and Japan's entry into World War II, ponderous, heavy machinery, marching soldiers, menacing guns and above all bomber aircraft combine to give the posters a crushing, inhuman, Orwellian aspect. This epitomises Japanese fasc
