Reluctant Leave-taking late 1760s Suzuki Harunobu Japanese The application of one color over another increased the range of color and offered a means of creating subtle effects, such as transparency and shadowing. In this print of a young man departing from his lover, we see Harunobu's inventive employment of polychrome techniques in search of illusionary effects. The woman adjusts her lover's robe from under the veil of the mosquito netting, which we perceive to alter the color of her kimono. Color has now completely replaced line in the transformation of decorative patterning, as evidenced in the patterning of the kimono. Three Intoxicated Courtesans 1790s Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese Utamaro's use of silhouette to render the enormous length of the Green House and its inhabitants is unquestionably bold. Three groups of courtesans stand on a balcony, and the tops of the blossoming cherry trees in the courtyard are visible behind them. The silhouettes visible across the courtyard reinforce the almost claustrophobic lack of privacy afforded by these pleasure houses. Utamaro's inscriptions describe the various reactions people have when intoxicated. They are, from right to left: anger, crying, and laughter. This dramatic triptych displays an unusually subdued color palette for Utamaro. So limited is his palette that the artist utilizes the color of the unprinted paper as part of the design on the courtesans' robes. The large oban format became popular at the end of the eighteenth century, replacing the smaller chuban format favored by such artists as Harunobu. Utamaro's use of silhouette to render the enormous

Caught in the Act. Shunga (erotic) prints featured every imaginable form of sexual activity, including voyeurism. Their explicit content resulted in their being condemned as harmful to public morals’ and censored by the government. This, of course, did not stop the printmakers. But even today such images - many of which feature outrageously proportioned genitalia - are banned frombeing imported back into Japan.

He is washing out his ears in a desperate effort to convince her that he knows absolutely nothing of a letter from her rival. The letter discovered by the mistress is seen in the mouth of her cat. THE NOJI TAMAGAWA RIVER IN THE OMI PROVINATION

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (川国芳, January 1, 1797 - April 14, 1862) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.
