Water Margin (known in Chinese as Shuihu Zhuan, sometimes abbreviated to Shuihu), also known as Suikoden in Japanese, as well as Outlaws of the Marsh, Tale of the Marshes, All Men Are Brothers, Men of the Marshes, or The Marshes of Mount Liang, is a 14th century novel and one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in vernacular Chinese, the story, set in the Song Dynasty, tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gathered at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces. In 1827, Japanese publisher Kagaya Kichibei commissioned Utagawa Kuniyoshi to produce a series of woodblock prints illustrating the 108 heroes of the Suikoden. The 1827-1830 series, called '108 Heroes of the Water Margin' or 'Tsuzoku Suikoden goketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori', made Utagawa Kuniyoshi's famous.

The Warrior Slaying the Giant White Hihi 1859, 2nd month Utagawa Yoshitora Japanese This print illustrates a warrior of legendary bravery, Iwami Jūtarō, slaying a monstrous ape (hihi). The huge ape is carefully embossed on uncolored paper to reveal the texture of the animal's hair. In contrast to the white hair, the warrior in dark kimono, the black background, and the ape's red face and ear emphasize the creature's size and ferocity. Yoshitora, a pupil of Kuniyoshi, concentrated on his teacher's favorite subject matter in the early part of his career and focused on prints of foreigners in Yokohama and of foreign scenes (Yokohama-e) during the Meiji period.. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (January 1, 1798 - April 14, 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.

Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833 - February 6, 1904, also known as or Ochiai Yoshiiku), was a Japanese printmaker and newspaper illustrator. The son of a tea house proprietor, he was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Utagawa went to school with Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, recognized as the last great masters of Ukiyo (woodblock printing). Eimei nijuhasshuku (28 Famous Murders with Verse)., also known as the 'Bloody Prints', is a collection of Japanese ukiyo-e from the 1860s, which depicted gruesome acts of murder or torture based on historical events or scenes in Kabuki plays. Although most of the works are solely violent by nature, it is perhaps the first known example of ero guro or the erotic grotesque in Japanese culture, an art sub-genre which depicts either erotic or extreme images of violence and mutilation.

Tokugawa Ieshige (January 28, 1712 - July 13, 1761) was the ninth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan. Uninterested in government affairs, Ieshige left all decisions in the hands of his chamberlain, Ooka Tadamitsu (1709-1760). He officially retired in 1760 and assumed the title of Ogosho, appointed his first son Tokugawa Ieharu as the 10th shogun, and died the following year. Ieshige's reign was beset by corruption, natural disasters, periods of famine and the emergence of the mercantile class, and his clumsiness in dealing with these issues greatly weakened the rule of Tokugawa.
