Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine mid-16th century Sekish Shan This painting captures the final moment of a legendary fourth-century encounter between three Chinese gentlemen—the Daoist master Lu Xiujing (406-477), the Buddhist monk Huiyuan (334-416), and the poet Tao Qian (Tao Yuanming ; 365-427). According to the legend, known as “Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine” (in Chinese Huxi sanxiao, and in Japanese Kokei sansh), the monk Huiyuan, who had established the Pure Land Buddhist temple Donglinsi near the storied Lu Mountains in 386 and maintained a decades-old vow to never to leave the mountain temple, was enjoying the company of the Daoist Lu and Confucian Tao, fellow residents of the Lu Mountains area who were purported to be frequent visitors. The Tokugawa shogunate, also known as the Tokugawa bakufu and the Edo bakufu, was a feudal regime of Japan established by Tokugawa Ieyasu and ruled by the shoguns of the Tokugawa family. This period is known as the Edo period and gets its name from the capital city, Edo, which is now called Tokyo, after the name was changed in 1864. The Tokugawa shogunate ruled from Edo Castle from 1603 until 1868, when it was finally abolished during the Meiji Restoration.

Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), courtesy name Zhanghou and pseudonym Laolian, was a Chinese painter from Zhuji who lived during the late Ming Dynasty era. Couplet dated 1867 Zhao Zhiqian Chinese Zhao Zhiqian, the leading scholar-artist of his day, grew up in a merchant family but received a classical education in order to pursue a career in government. Passing the provincial civil-service examination in 1859, Zhao spent the next twelve years in Beijing selling his art while trying unsuccessfully to pass the capital examination before being awarded a post as district magistrate in Jiangxi Province in 1872.Zhao was equally renowned as a calligrapher, seal carver, and painter. He is best known for a distinctive "square-brush" style of calligraphy derived from the engraved stone writings of the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), as seen in his dedication and signature here, but he also developed a distinctively plump seal-script manner exemplified by this couplet, which expresses a sentiment appropriate for a Confucian household:Great virtue comes from forbearance,sincerity comes from a mind free from deception.(translated by Jason Zhixin Sun)

Shigeru Aoki (1882-1911) was a Japanese painter famed for his combining of Japanese mythology and legends with the Western-style art movement that could be found in some late 19th and early 20th century Japanese paintings. Aoki was born into an ex-samurai household in northern Kyushu. He left his home in 1899 to pursue artistic studies in Tokyo, and soon began to accumulate critical acclaim for his artwork and its use of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood techniques mixed with Kojiki themes. He died in March 1911 from tuberculosis, aged only 28.

The bright yellow background, a color exclusive to the emperor, further confirms its imperial origins. The five phoenixes probably refer to the five species of this auspicious bird in Chinese myths. This piece is paired with another five-phoenix panel in The Met collection, and the set could represent the five ideal relationships (wulun) in Confucianism: between father and son, husband and wife, emperor and official, senior and youth, and among friends. Scroll Cover for Imperial Calligraphy China This wonderful textile illustrates the continuation of the use of luxurious tapestries as covers for paintings and calligraphies. The inscription states that it was produced to accompany the Qianlong Emperors calligraphy of his own essay discussing the difficulty and ease of founding and maintaining an empire. As a tailor-made cover for an imperial work, the tapestry is superb: the body of the dragon is executed in gold thread, and the flowers and leaves are rendered in subtle hues and shades.. Flowers of Spring and Autumn shortly after 1701 Ogata Krin On the right-hand panel, white plum blossoms, a harbinger of spring, stand out against fine-grained wood and the stark branches of a leafless tree. The companion panel features flowers and grasses of late summer and early autumn: morning glories, pampas grasses, white and blue bellflowers, and exuberant white, pink, and red chrysanthemums. Flowers of Spring and Autumn combines the highly stylized renditions of natural elements for which Krin became famous and the ink painting in the Chinese style that was the foundation of his artistic training.The signature “Hokky Krin” appears in the right-hand panel’s lower right corner, and both panels bear the artist’s distinctive round seal reading “Koresuke.” The brushwork and signature style suggest that this diptych dates to just after Krin was granted the honorific title Hokky (Bridge of the Law)..
