Dutchman with a Servant. Artist: Attributed to Kawahara Keiga (Japanese, 1786-1860). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image: 19 3/4 x 9 7/8 in. (50.2 x 25.1 cm). Date: early 19th century. This is painting was inspired by an early print of the 1750s entitled "Hollander" (Orandajin no zu) that was produced by the publisher Hariya in Nagasaki, the only port foreigners were allowed to enter Japan for most of the Edo period. That print, which became a template for countless subsequent prints and paintings of Dutch figures, identifies the dandily dressed figure with bright blue eyes and long, curly blond hair as the kapitan, referring to the opperhoofd, the manager of the Dutch factory on the island of Deshima (off the shore of Nagasaki). He puffs on a long clay pipe, reminding us that tobacco and its consumption was an insidious import from Europe in the mid to late sixteenth century, and then was grown locally. The opperhoofd wears tight leggings and an overly fancy long jacket of Dutch colonia

Intoxicated Lady at a Window Indian. Intoxicated Lady at a Window, late 18th century. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 13 3/4 x 11 3/8 in. (34.9 x 28.9 cm). The male patrons for Indian painting commissioned many images of lovesick women who suffer terribly while their lovers are away. This woman sits at a window, perhaps watching for the arrival of her beloved. The use of a window as framing device here is somewhat ironic, because window frames appear more often in official portraits of rulers. Here, instead of a proud prince we see a woman who has been assuaging her longings with either wine or opium: she leans awkwardly on one arm, her eyes tinged with pink, her eyelids drooping. The fact that she wears no blouse suggests that she is a courtesan, but her jewelry and the precious flask and cup suggest that she enjoys a high level of patronage. What might be a tawdry or pathetic scene is elevated by the high quality of painting and the sophisticated palette of muted blues a

The Trumpet and the Bassoon November 1803 Thomas Rowlandson This is one of two prints that Rowlandson devoted to a snoring couple, using the title to suggest that the man projects a lower sound and the woman a higher. This 1803 version, published by William Holland, centers on the two sleepers snuggled together. In 1811 Rowlandson adapted the idea for Thomas Tegg and expanded the view to include the bedroom (see 17.3.888-11, 59.533.1398, and 59.533..2017; for other impressions of this image see 59.533.2018).. Between the end of the First World War in 1918 and the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941, Japanese graphic design as represented in advertsing posters, magazine covers and book covers underwent a series of changes characterised by increasing Western influence, a growing middle class, industrialisation and militarisation, as well as (initially) left wing political ideals and (subsequently) right wing nationalism and the influence of European Fascist art forms.
