In order to undermine Michizane's reputation, his rivals at court falsely accused him of plotting to kill the emperor. As a result, he was exiled to the island of Kyushu where he eventually died. Later, several calamities at court were attributed to Michizane's vengeful spirit. Here, Michizane is shown as the god of thunder in the clouds above. His rage causes the courtiers who conspired against him to be struck by lightning. In order to placate Michizane's ghost, the emperor deified him as the Shinto god Tenjin (Heavenly Being) and dedicated shrines to him in Kyoto and Kyushu.

Portraits of Three Famous Poets: Hitomaro (M) Ise (R) Komachi (L) Tosa Mitsuoki Japanese Tosa Mitsunari Japanese Tosa Mitsutaka Japanese 1691 A trio of Tosa painters—father, son, and grandson—collaborated to create this triptych of imaginary portraits of three of the greatest poets of ancient Japan. In the center scroll, the patriarch of Japanese poetry Kakinomoto no Hitomaro (ca. 660-724), shown in his typical pose leaning on an arm rest with writing accoutrements beside him, was painted by Mitsuoki—the esteemed head of the official painting bureau from 1654 until his death. Lady Ise, in gorgeous court robes, shown in the right scroll, was created by Mitsunari, Mitsuoki’s son. The court lady and poet Ono no Komachi (ca. 825- ca. 900), shown with a water basin before her, is the creation of Mitsutaka, the Tosa master’s grandson. Thus, this magnificent set of poet portraits is not only celebrating the esteemed place of waka (31-syllable court poetry) in Japanese cultura

The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaid ( Kiso Kaid Rokujky-tsugi) or Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Road, is a series of ukiyo-e works created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). There are 71 total prints in the series (one for each of the 69 post stations and Nihonbashi; Nakatsugawa-juku has two prints). The common name for the Kiso Kaid is 'Nakasend' or 'Central Mountain Highway', so this series is also commonly referred to as the Sixty-nine Stations of the Nakasend. The Nakasend was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capitol of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Nakasend connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. It was an alternate route to the Tkaid and travelled through the central part of Honsh, thus giving rise to its name, which means 'Central Mountain Road'. Along this road, there were sixty-nine different post stations (-shuku or -juku), which provi

In the dark background, at the foot of the hill Matsuchiyama and flanking the San'ya Canal and the pillars of the Imado Bridge, are the alluring lights of two restaurants. Stars glitter in the sky above and are reflected in the water below. In the foreground, a geisha follows the bright lantern of her attendant along the embankment. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - June 9, 1892), also named Taiso Yoshitoshi, was a Japanese artist. He is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese woodblock printing. He is additionally regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras - the last years of feudal Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in new things from the rest of the world, but over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many outstanding aspects of traditional Japanese culture, among them traditional woodblock printing.

George Chinnery (5 January 1774 - 30 May 1852) was an English painter who spent most of his life in Asia, especially India and southern China. Chinnery was born in London and after training in England became a famous portrait painter in Ireland by 1802. He married his wife Marianne on 19 April 1799 in Dublin. His father owned several trading ships and his elder brother, William Chinnery, owned what is now Gilwell Park. He was a close friend of the artist, William Armfield Hobday. Chinnery ran into debt and went to India in 1802 on a ship named Gilwell. He there re-established himself as a painter, but debt prompted a move again in 1825, when he went to southern China. While in China, he mentored Lam Qua, who eventually became a renowned medical portrait painter. He travelled around the Pearl River Delta, between Macau and Canton (now Guangzhou). He had been to Hong Kong after the British founded the city, and subsequently fell ill. He died in Macau in 1852 and is buried in the Old Prot
