Demon Reciting Buddhist Prayers, second half 18th century, Unknown Japanese, 13 3/16 x 8 7/8in. (33.5 x 22.5cm), Ink and color on paper, Japan, 18th-19th century, Oni are horned, fanged, and generally ferocious demons whose actions range from the truly sinister to the benignly humorous. This one wears the black robes of a Buddhist priest. With a brass gong hung around his neck, a small hammer in his right hand, and a list of followers in his left, he chants the nembutsu, an invocation to Amida Buddha for the salvation of all souls.

Shakyamuni Emerging from the Mountains, 1244. China, Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). Hanging scroll, ink on paper; overall: 166.4 x 49.9 cm (65 1/2 x 19 5/8 in.). Shakyamuni emerged from the mountains after years of ascetic practices, which anticipated his sermon in the Deer Park and attainment of enlightenment under the bodhi tree. However, this figure of Shakyamuni can be interpreted as having already achieved enlightenment and re-entered the sentient world to spread the dharma. Chijue Daochings inscription mentions his indifferent glance at the morning star, suggesting nonattachment: Entering the mountains he was much too thin and withered. The snow is overlaid with frost—it is cold. Casting an indifferent glance, he saw a [morning star. Why should he once again emerge among the world of men.

The Yongzheng Emperor (13 December 1678 - 8 October 1735), was the fifth emperor of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and the third Qing emperor to rule over China proper, from 1722 to 1735. A hard-working ruler, Yongzheng's main goal was to create an effective government at minimum expense. Like his father, the Kangxi Emperor, Yongzheng used military force in order to preserve the dynasty's position. Suspected by historians to have usurped the throne, his reign was often called despotic, efficient, and vigorous. Although Yongzheng's reign was much shorter than the reigns of both his father, the Kangxi Emperor, and his son, the Qianlong Emperor, his sudden death was probably brought about by his workload. Yongzheng continued an era of continued peace and prosperity as he cracked down on corruption and waste, and reformed the financial administration.
