The Spaceflight Effects on Vascular Endothelial and Smooth Muscle Cell Process (STaARS BioScience-3) investigation contributes to a greater understanding of cardiovascular disease (CVD) through the study of transcriptomics of vascular cells. Upon return from spaceflight, crew members often display alterations in their cardiovascular systems, similar to those suffering from CVD. The goal of this work is to elucidate the mechanism of vascular cell damage in the space environment by exposing vascular cells to spaceflight.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Space Life Sciences Lab, Lanfang Levine, with Dynamac Corp., transfers material into a sample bottle for analysis. She is standing in front of new equipment in the lab that will provide gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The equipment will enable analysis of volatile compounds, such as from plants. The 100,000 square-foot facility houses labs for NASAs ongoing research efforts, microbiology/microbial ecology studies and analytical chemistry labs. Also calling the new lab home are facilities for space flight-experiment and flight-hardware development, new plant growth chambers, and an Orbiter Environment Simulator that will be used to conduct ground control experiments in simulated flight conditions for space flight experiments. Reportage on the TIRO lab (Oncology Imaging and Radiotherapy Transporters), an interdisciplinary structure within the Medicine Department of Nice University in France, grouping clinicians and biologists. Reportage at the Polytechnic school in Lausanne (Switzerland), in the integrated systems lab. The lab is developing an implantable system allowing human metabolism to be monitored. The implant has 5 biosensors, which measure the density of various molecules, a temperature sensor and a PH sensor. It transmits real time data via Bluetooth. Researchers can select the molecules they wish to detect on each separate biosensor (eg. Glucose or cholesterol). The implant is positioned according to the pathology to be monitored. A researcher is developing a larger version of the biosensors, she places a nanotube carbon solution and a specific enzyme on the nano-materials, which allow the desired molecule to be measured.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Drilling Platform exploded and sank, causing the largest oil spill yet recorded. Samples from the oil spill were collected by Louisiana USGS scientists Greg Swayze and Charlie Demas and sent for analysis in Menlo Park, CA. The first step of the process was a liquid chromatograph column analysis of the compounds, which separated the individual compounds that compose the petroleum. Then, the samples were placed in a nitrogen evaporator, which vaporized the original solvents. Now, the samples are dissolved into a new set of solvents. These solvents allow a mass spectrometer to finely separate the compounds in the petroleum to further identify the overall sample.

Angie Huerta, a first-year Ph.D. student studying particle physics at the University of Notre Dame, recently completed a GEM Fellowship program at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At Kennedy, Huerta worked closely on a project testing hydrogen plasma on lunar regolith simulant, which is similar to returned lunar soil samples, to explore the plasmas reliability and efficiency potential for Artemis, NASAs lunar exploration program.
